As local governments have struggled to weather a painful and prolonged recession, elected leaders have been forced to examine public spending in a way that they haven't for years. The bulk of that spending is used to compensate employees. In the second half of 2010, The Gazette requested data from Frederick, Montgomery and Prince George's county governments, school systems and municipalities so residents could better understand how many of their tax dollars are spent. The data presented here are as of July 1, 2010 - the start of the current fiscal year - and positions or salaries may have changed since then. Readers are encouraged to make use of this tool to better inform themselves about county budgets and the difficult decisions that lie ahead.
