Congress, Dist. 6
Gary Hoover (Independent)
Q. What are your top three priorities for the next two years, if elected? National debt, jobs, economy.
Q. How would you rate the performance of the House of Representatives: excellent, good, fair or poor? Why?
Poor. They have no interest in what is best for the country, just what is best to get them re-elected.
Q. How would you have voted on the $700 billion bailout/rescue package that Congress just approved?
Against it.
Q. Is the bailout package a slippery slope? Can we expect other industries to need/expect similar massive help and, if that's the case, how should the government respond?
I would not have voted for the bailout bill, as we see it has not helped stir the market, and I believe it has open doors for others to expect similar help. We cannot afford to be saving private industries nor should the government be involved in private business.
Q. Do you have a timeline on when the U.S. should pull out of Iraq?
I believe the time table that the Iraq government has put forward of 16 months would work. We have to be careful withdrawing and make sure are troops are safe, but at the same time we cannot afford to continue to spend $10 billion a month in Iraq.
Q. Should more be done to shore up Social Security? Why?
Not sure I don't have enough information at this time on the internal workings to have a informed opinion.
Q. Should more be done to shore up Medicare? Why?
Repeal the law that says the drugs companies can charge whatever they want for medicine and we cannot negotiate their prices.
Q. What is your position on the death penalty?
I am in favor of the death penalty in some cases (murder of a police officer, correction officer etc.) also when there is no doubt whatsoever as to the guilt of the person. I think we have to have a higher standard the guilty beyond a reason doubt when we impose the death penalty. Once we use the death penalty, we cannot go back and say. "Oops, sorry. We were wrong. You are not guilty." That is why there has to be a very high standard before its use.
Q. What is your position on abortion?
Personally, I am very pro-life. I could accept an abortion in the case of the health of the mother, incest or forceful rape, but would still discourage it. But this is an area I do not believe the federal government should be involved in. I believe we as a people need to do ever thing possible to discourage people from having abortions but as a government we need to stay out of it.
Q. What is your position on same-sex marriages?
I believe in one man one women marriage, but I would agree with civil unions, another area I do not believe the federal government should be involved in. We need less government involvement in our lives, not more.
Q. Do you support the federal No Child Left Behind law? Why or Why not?
No, I do not support NCLB because it has been a failure. We have more children being left behind today then before NCLB. I believe we should get rid of the Department of Education also. It was formed in 1969, and costs $60 billion a year, and we keep dropping compared to other countries in the world.
The Department of Education is a failure, and we need to help our children by returning control to local school boards and the parents.
Q. What state transportation projects are a priority for you? How should we pay for them?
I believe we need to bring the Metro or light rail to the Sixth district. This would not only save a lot of fuel and relive the traffic jams, but also would make life a lot better for those in the district. Parents being home instead of sitting in traffic, what a great idea.
Q. Is the federal government doing enough to help communities deal with the effects of the Base Realignment and Closure plan? Why?
We need to break our need for foreign oil, and, yes, I agree with a Manhattan Project-type effort along with private investment. This is a national security issue, and in order for us to be safe, we must develop alternative fuels now. I would propose more private investments in the bases being closed to create new jobs that the communities are losing many of these jobs could be green jobs created by alternative fuels.
Q. Is the federal government doing enough to protect the border? Why?
No, we do not do enough to protect our border, and we need to. We also need to do more to secure our ports and airports. The most dangerous illegal immigrants come right through the ports and air ports and overstay their visas. We need the system to track guests in our country and know when they come and if they leave when they are supposed to.
Q. What should the federal government do about the illegal immigrants already in the United States?
They should be found and return to their country. I know that we cannot locate all 20 million of them, but if those thinking about coming know that if you come and are found you will be returned. Right now, there is no fear of any penalty if you come here illegal. We must enforce our laws.
Q. What is your opinion of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America?
I disagree with it.
