A quest to find the perfect gift for football coaches with Winfield Recreation Council turned into a gift to those less fortunate this holiday season.

Susan Cole, a football team parent with the rec council, said she and fellow parents were ‘‘stumped” to find the perfect gift to thank their coaches for all their hard work. Cole said most parents of the 10- and 11-year-olds on the team have been with the coaches for years.

Once someone mentioned helping a team devastated by the hurricanes this fall, parents knew they found the perfect present.

‘‘We thought it was a great idea,” Cole said. So she went online and found that the City of Kenner, La., needed all its football equipment replaced.

The Kenner Recreation Council had distributed all the items — uniforms and equipment — just before the hurricane hit, so it needed everything, Cole said.

The Winfield team raised $600 to send to their peers in Kenner to help rebuild its football program

‘‘It was so sweet,” said Carol Luna, deputy chief administrator officer for the City of Kenner. Luna said that the recreation department falls under control of the city, so she was the contact for Cole.

‘‘It wasn’t a city or politicians,” Luna said. ‘‘These were families.”

‘‘They’re very appreciative,” Cole said. The kids liked the idea, she added. ‘‘They couldn’t imagine not being able to play football.”

‘‘We thank the parents and coaches. It speaks volumes about the community there,” Luna said. ‘‘We feel hugs from across the country.”
