Eleven Prince George's County high school football players were named first-team all-state in balloting by media members from across Maryland. The Big School and Small School All-State Teams were released on Monday.
The Big School First Team Offense includes running back Anthony Wright of Henry A. Wise High, wide receiver Derrick Thomas of Eleanor Roosevelt and offensive linemen Pete deSouza of DeMatha and Danzel Manley of Roosevelt. Wright was the Gazette-Star Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 1,760 yards and 21 touchdowns. Thomas is a Penn State recruit, while deSouza is headed to Maryland and Manley will play at Old Dominion.
Defensive linemen Jeremiah Mathis of DeMatha and Isaiah Ross of Roosevelt and linebacker Lorne Goree of Charles H. Flowers were named to the First Team Defense. Goree, a Maryland recruit, was the Gazette-Star's Defensive Player of the Year, compiling 194 tackles, 12 sacks and three interceptions.
Wide receiver Antonio Belt of Forestville was the lone county player named to the Small School First Team Offense. Belt caught 39 passes for 861 yards and 13 touchdowns. His Forestville teammate, DeOnte Arnett, was named to the first team as a defensive lineman. Arnett (15 sacks in 2008) is joined on the defense by Gwynn Park lineman Raynard Randolph and Frederick Douglass linebacker Devon Bridges. Randolph made 68 tackles and three sacks and is being recruited by a host of major Division I programs. Bridges had 133 tackles, four forced fumbles and two interceptions.
DeMatha quarterback Tom Chroniger and running back Marcus Coker were named to the Big School Second Team Offense along with Wise lineman Joseph Creek. Chroniger was the only player in the state to have 1,000 yards rushing and passing this season. Coker ran for 1,174 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Suitland linebacker John Darr, Flowers linebacker Brandon Killebrew and DeMatha defensive back Emmanuel McPhearson were named to the second-team defense. Darr and Killebrew each had more than 100 tackles this season, and McPhearson had seven interceptions.
Small school second-team selections included offensive lineman Reggie Eiland of Gwynn Park and Tijon Porter of Douglass, linebacker Terrence Keon of Riverdale Baptist and defensive back Khalek Sheperd of Gwynn Park.
