Ram girls: gimme ‘D’ and ‘O’

Rockville tops Wheaton to move to 2-1

The Rockville girls basketball team improved its record to 2-1 Friday with a 43-21 win over Wheaton. It was the Ram’s second straight victory after a season-opening loss to Kennedy.

Rockville has been reliant on its defensive play the past couple years. Unable to put up big scoring numbers, it’s depended on minimizing its opponents’ offensive production to stay competitive.

Though the Rams played well enough defensively Friday, using their overall team speed to pressure the Knights, Rockville’s offense has shined early in the season.

For the first time in three years the Rams are a senior-laden bunch — seven total. And it’s evident in their play. Everybody’s getting involved to produce a balanced offensive attack. The Rams feel more comfortable with the ball in their hands. And rather than rushing in critical situations like they have in the recent past, they’ve become more patient, smarter.

‘‘We’re starting to execute a lot more at halfcourt,” Rockville coach Mark Crichton said. ‘‘And that’s big. In the past if the spacing wasn’t there the girls would just try and do something on their own. And that would cause turnovers. We’re a much more poised club now, we know when to hold the ball.”

Led by senior guards Shaday Doyley and Raven Gilmore, who each tallied nine points, and sophomore Zemeka (9 points), 12 of Rockville’s 13 players scored.

‘‘In the first game we played the girls were still looking for certain people to score,” Crichton said. ‘‘But in the last two games, everyone, regardless of whether or not my subs are in, is contributing. And that’s nice.”
