Prince George's County residents are encouraged to share their ideas for the future of the county at a series of forums scheduled for November and December.
"Envision Prince George's" is a new initiative launched by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission with support from AmericaSpeaks, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit that encourages civic participation, and the county's Planning and Parks and Recreation departments.
Attendees will break out into small groups to discuss everything from transportation and health care to historic preservation and economic development.
Forums are scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Oxon Hill; and Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Prince George's Ballroom in Landover.
A special event for young people is scheduled for 10 a.m. Dec. 5 at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center in College Park. A countywide forum is planned for March.

Thomas Johnson Middle celebrates student readers
On Nov. 16, Thomas Johnson Middle School in Lanham honored students who excelled during the first quarter at the school's Jaguar awards program.
As part of the school's 25-book campaign, students were asked to read 25 books that are at least 125 pages by the end of the school year in June. Honor students must read books that are at least 150 pages.
Seventh-graders Betty Flomo and Rene Peart have each read 26 books since Aug. 24; eighth-grader Ayesha Asif has read 30 books thus far.
Seventh-graders Alyssa Logan, Chizitere Odidika and Charlene Dennah and eighth-grader Derick Wald received the "Reading Achievement Award" for reading 12 books since school started in August.
Nearly 360 other students received awards: student of the month, which recognizes students for attendance, character, discipline and academic achievement; principal's hall of fame, which honors students with a 4.0 grade point average and excellent classroom behavior; the principal's award, which recognizes students who earn a 4.0 GPA in all classes; jaguar scholar, for students who earn an "A" or "B" in all classes and have satisfactory classroom behavior; honor roll for students with at least a 3.0 GPA; and perfect attendance.

Free energy audits, energy class information available
The Seat Pleasant Community Development Corporation will hold a community meeting on home energy audits and renewable energy classes from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 5 at the Seat Pleasant Activity Center at 5720 Addison Road. The audits are free to residents, and the classes are first-come, first-serve for residents who want to learn "green" energy technology for future employment. Refreshments will be served.

Computer giant offering free training to county residents
More than 1,000 vouchers are now available to Prince George's County residents for free Microsoft training because the state has partnered with Microsoft Corporation to provide free technology training to displaced workers.
Vouchers are distributed through the county's One-Stop Career Centers at 1100 Mercantile Lane, Suite 100 in Largo, and 312 Marshall Ave., Suite 504, in Laurel to county residents on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Courses range from basic technology literacy to intermediate-level technology skills for Microsoft Windows, Office online training, Microsoft Business Certification exams and advanced technical and professional level online training.

Women's financial literary symposium planned
Prince George's Community College and the Maryland Commission for Women are hosting the "Women's Symposium on Financial Literacy" from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5 in Largo Student Center at Prince George's Community College at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
The symposium will address the statewide foreclosure crisis facing women today and discuss ways to strengthen women's knowledge and self-confidence in this economy.
Speakers include Chief Justice Robert Bell, State Comptroller Peter Franchot and Sarah Bloom Raskin, Maryland's commissioner of financial regulation.
The Maryland Commission for Women works to create an initiative that empowers women to become architects of change in their own lives and the lives of others.

Largo school hosting juried student art league exhibition
Prince George's Community College is displaying the fall 2009 Juried Student Art League Exhibition from now through noon Dec. 10 in the Marlboro Gallery at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
Student artists will display their newest works and judges will choose the award-winning pieces from the participating artists. The gallery will be closed today and Friday.
The public is invited to a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3.

County landfill beginning
new operating hours
Effective Wednesday, the new hours of operation at the Brown Station Road Sanitary Landfill at 11611 White House Road in Upper Marlboro are from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays.
The new hours for the landfill's Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Acceptance sites are from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and closed on Sundays.
The landfill is open for residents to dispose of their trash, free of charge. Residential vehicles permitted to enter the landfill include cars, station wagons, sedans, sport utility vehicles, XUVs, passenger vans, trailers no larger than 5 feet by 9 feet and pickup trucks having a gross vehicle weight of less than 10,000 pounds.
The hours of operation remain the same at the Brown Station Road Convenience Center at 3501 Brown Station Road in Upper Marlboro. The center is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays.

H1N1 vaccinations
Prince George's County is providing H1N1 shots to all school children at their schools and to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention priority groups from 9 a.m. to noon every Thursday at the Cheverly Health Clinic at 3003 Hospital Drive in Cheverly. The program began Oct. 27 and will continue until further notice.
Priority groups include pregnant women, people who live with or care for infants under 6 months, health care and emergency medical services personnel, all people ages 6 months through 24 years, and people age 25 to 64 with medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications.
