Transgenders want to live like the rest of us

In response to Sue White’s comment concerning transgendered persons using ‘‘family restrooms where they can be locked [for privacy] when in use,” I believe that statement oversimplifies the issue (‘‘Council bans transgender bias; opponents plan to lobby for veto,” Nov. 14 article).

Many transgendered persons would be glad for the availability of single-occupant restrooms, but the fact is that they aren’t always readily available as needed. The goal of transgendered persons isn’t to expose genitalia purposely to cause discomfort to others or endanger anyone; they want to live their lives as anyone else.

Biological males using a female restroom would likely go into a locked stall anyway, not exposing anything to anyone.

Sending a biologically born male presenting as female into a men’s facility, or vice versa, would not only cause unexpected circumstances for a young child, but also put the transgendered person into a potentially dangerous situation. Many college campuses and other organizations already lead in the effort of standardizing a single-occupant⁄gender neutral restroom option.

We need to respectfully, cautiously and compassionately work together to find solutions as we move through the growing pains of a society based on freedom and justice for all.
