The Greenbelt Police Department is scheduled to conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Wednesday evening in Old Greenbelt before moving on to saturation patrols in other areas of the city.
"It's not that we expect to arrest any drunk drivers, it's more to get awareness," Officer Scott Kaiser said.
The checkpoint is among many operating Wednesday throughout the region that were organized by the Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign, a law enforcement effort sponsored by the National Highway Administration that targets alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers.
Kaiser said the night before Thanksgiving has recently become one of the deadliest nights for motorists due to drunken drivers and unbuckled motorists.
"It's a long weekend, and a lot of people use that as an excuse to drink," Kaiser said.
