Montgomery County Public School's Parent Academy invites all parents to attend a free parent workshop on "Helping Your Child Get Ready for MSAs" and "Understanding the HSAs and the Bridge Plan" at 7 p.m. Thursday at Baker Middle School, 25400 Oak Drive in Damascus.

Food drives held this week
The annual Damascus High School Canned Food Drive is under way this week and all students are asked to support the effort by donating canned goods and other non-perishables food items at their fourth-period classes.
The class with the most cans will be awarded doughnuts on Nov. 26.
The Clarksburg High School Ambassador's Club is also sponsoring a food drive this week.
The food drive will be a competition between first-period classes with a winner receiving doughnuts and juice. Take donations to first-period classes.
CHS offers informal
parent meetings
Clarksburg High School parents and guardians are invited to attend an informal gathering in the principal's conference room the third Thursday of each month from 8 to 9 a.m.
The next one is this week.
The get-together is an opportunity to engage in open dialogue with Principal James Koutsos and find out what is happening at the school. The school will provide a continental breakfast.
Koutsos will also hold four evening ice cream socials in lieu of four of the breakfast meetings. The ice cream socials will occur once per quarter from 8 to 9 p.m. The next one is Dec. 4.

Noises Off' playing
in Damascus
The Damascus High School Drama Club will present its production of the comedy "Noises Off" this week.
Shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.
Grandparents are invited to upcounty schools
Woodfield Elementary School will hold Grandparents Day on Tuesday when grandparents and surrogate grandparents can visit their grandchildren in class from 9 to 11 a.m.
They are invited to attend a welcome breakfast before heading off to classes.
Tuesday is also Grandparents Day at Clearspring Elementary School. The Clearspring PTA will hold a continental breakfast for grandparents before they visit the classrooms of their grandchildren.

The Montgomery County Students Information Technology Foundation and the Montgomery County Students Automotive Trades Foundation students will be selling computers and used cars they have refurbished at the first student-run sale of this school year 9-11 a.m. Dec.6 at Gaithersburg High School, 314 North Frederick Ave.

DHS sociology class conducts service projects
Robert Dickie's sociology class will be conducting several community-oriented service projects this year to address the needs of residents in the region.
The projects include collecting old cell phones for the "Cell Phones For Soldiers" program that provides members of the U.S. armed forces stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan with a one-hour phone card to enable them to call home. For more information, visit

The students are also collecting used eyeglasses for the Lion's Club "Gift of Sight" program that matches up discarded eyeglasses with someone in need, empty computer printer ink cartridges, Campbell Soup Company product labels and school supplies to be sent do a school in Honduras by Monday.
Items may be dropped off in Room 134 after school or during C lunch period.
Thomas Edison to host open house
Thomas Edison High School of Technology in Wheaton will hold its annual open house 5-8 p.m. Dec. 4.
The open house will serve as an opportunity for students and parents to learn about the 19 career programs available to high school students.
In the event of inclement weather, the date will be changed to Dec. 10.

sell blankets
The Clarksburg Band and Orchestra Parents are selling Clarksburg High School throw blankets to raise funds for the Instrumental Music Department.
The blankets are woven of 100 percent cotton and cost $40.

Homework Hotline Live!, a Montgomery County Public Schools Instructional Television (MCPS-ITV) program, began its 22nd year of broadcasting last week.
Since 1986, the program has provided homework help to hundreds of students in grades kindergarten through 12. It offers one-on-one homework help in most academic subjects from kindergarten to 12th grade. MCPS teachers take calls from students live on-the-air and assist them with homework problems.
Homework Hotline Live! is broadcast 5-6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays on Comcast Channel 33, Verizon Chanel 35, and RCN Channel 88.
