The woman exited the bus at Bel Pre Road near Grand Bel Pre Road at approximately 7:30 p.m. when a man got off the bus at the same time and began following her towards a nearby apartment complex, police said.
As they passed a wooded area, the man forced her off the sidewalk and into the woods, police said. He attempted to rape her, but the victim was able to fight him off and he fled across Bel Pre Road.
The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.
Angela Cruz, a Montgomery County Police spokeswoman, said there have not been any recent similar incidents in the area.
The man is described as black in his 20s and between 5 feet 8 inches tall and 5 feet 10 inches tall, police said. He was last seen wearing a red North Face jacket.
