Fort Washington: Historic home mixes old, new
House built in 1900 includes many modern conveniences
A brick path leads up to this cozy Fort Washington home, landscaped with plants and bushes, and with a large, covered porch welcoming visitors inside. The home itself has a charming historic feel, but comes with all the amenities of modern life.
Inside the home, the first level has high ceilings and hardwood floors. The front door opens into the living room, a long room with molding decorating the door and window frames. There is a large brick wood-burning fireplace at the far end, with a carved wooden mantle over top. It is framed by two small windows in the back of the home.
Next to the dining room is a small family room, with painted wood-panel walls and wooden beams on the ceiling. A full bathroom is off of this room, which contains an antique claw foot bath tub.
The kitchen feels open and spacious, with wide counters and hardwood cabinets. The washer and dryer are located in the kitchen, as well. There is an antiqued shelf hanging over the washer and dryer, which has carved molding around the top.
A door from the kitchen leads out to the back deck, which can also be accessed from the front by another brick path. The deck is wooden and very wide. It wraps around the side of the home, with a small set of steps down into the yard, and another set of steps leading up to a second deck above, sitting outside two of the bedrooms.
Another walkway leads out to the garage, which is a separate building. The garage has two bays and is oversized to leave plenty of room. There are pull-down stairs leading up into a large storage area above it. Next to the garage is a second outbuilding for storage, with two separate large entrances for a variety of large machines.
The second floor features several bedrooms, one that sits at the top of the stairs, with a dressing area to one side, and an exit out onto the second deck. Next to this is a short hall to the master bedroom. A walk-in closet and full bathroom are also located off of this hallway. The master bedroom itself includes an exit to the second deck as well. There is a third bedroom in between the master bedroom and the full bath.
On the other side of the stairs, the hall leads to a small arts and crafts room with an old-fashioned sink still installed and a closet to one side. Also in this hall is another full bathroom which contains an antique claw foot tub. Beyond this is the fourth bedroom, somewhat smaller and with a large closet. This bedroom circles back out into the main hall.
In the home's basement, there is a walk-up exit at the bottom of the stairs and storage under the stairs. It has the rough-in of a bathroom, as well as a kitchen area with a sink and second refrigerator. There is also a bedroom and family room in the basement.
The home has gas heat and central air, as well as sprinkler systems throughout, so despite its age, there is no fear of being uncomfortable. It also has a full security system throughout the house and in the garage, as well, which provides safety as well as comfort.
An open house of this home is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 22.
