All three of Greenbelt's schools Greenbelt Elementary, Springhill Lake Elementary and Greenbelt Middle, as well as Berwyn Heights Elementary in Berwyn Heights, are overcrowded, according to new county school data. However, Springhill Lake Elementary is the most overcrowded school, with 741 students enrolled, far exceeding the school's maximum capacity of 638 students.
Until information about boundary changes is released in December, schools are just having to "work with what we have," said Greenbelt Elementary School Principal Kimberly Seidel. The boundary changes would decrease the number of students that are currently slated to go to certain schools. Currently, Greenbelt Elementary has the capacity for 569 students, but have 600 enrolled.
The latest data was issued by Prince George's County Public Schools Department of Pupil Accounting and School Boundaries.
In an effort to minimize the effects of overcrowding, Springhill Lake Elementary School lunches are held in shifts according to grade level.
Greenbelt Elementary is coping by alternating the band teacher with the music teacher every other day, so the students have band or music every other day.
"We're using all of our spaces, but we're managing," Seidel said, noting that the school has more students enrolling every week.
Beth Brittan-Powell, a parent and former PTA president of Berwyn Heights Elementary School, is also concerned with the overcrowding.
"Right now, with the phase II boundary issues, a lot of parents are concerned, but Berwyn Heights has been overcrowded since they opened the doors," Brittan-Powell said. "Some classes have to be in smaller rooms, and some classes are getting 23 or 24 students when the maximum they can have is 25."
PGCPS Spokeswoman Lynn McCawley said that countywide, overcrowding is dealt with by bringing in long-term substitutes to handle the students to maintain the student-to-teacher ratio. However, "lunchtime is when the overcrowding is most noticeable," McCawley said.
Springhill Lake Elementary does not have any long-term substitutes, Principal Natasha Jenkins said.
"We are ensuring that all students are learning and taught the required skills and strategies to be successful," Jenkins wrote in an e-mail.
Greenbelt Elementary is 31 students over capacity, Berwyn Heights Elementary has 23 students over capacity and Greenbelt Middle School has 14 students over capacity.
Springhill Lake Elementary is the most over utilized, at 116 percent, followed by Greenbelt Elementary and Berwyn Heights Elementary at 105 percent and Greenbelt Middle at 102 percent.
Area schools under capacity include Paint Branch Elementary in College Park at 80 percent, Buck Lodge Middle in Adelphi at 78 percent and Cesar Chavez Elementary in Hyattsville at 60 percent. The schools that are underutilized have a higher chance of getting more students when the boundary changes take effect.
