Grace Young of Bethesda was recently named a regional finalist in this year's Siemens Competition for Math, Science, and technology.
Young, who attends the Potomac School in McLean, Va., teamed up with Montgomery Blair High School senior Jennifer Wang on the project "Validation of Parabolic Ian Trap Geometries for Use in Quantum Computing." The project is an extension of physics work the duo completed this summer at the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland.
"Our research was especially interesting because it demonstrates a method for improving the efficiency of ion trap-based quantum computers by a factor of 2,500, bringing large-scale quantum computing networks one step closer to reality," Young wrote in an e-mail to The Gazette.
Only 60 projects from across the country were chosen as regional finalists, from more than 1,300 entries.
The Siemens Competition is known nationwide as one of the most prestigious teen science competitions in the world.
Architecture and design students meet at B-CC high
Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School art students were visited by students in George Washington University's interior design program on Oct. 29, as part of a program to reach out to burgeoning artists.
Program director Stephanie Travis fielded questions from the Advanced Placement arts students and George Washington students showed the teens their portfolios, and what can be done with a degree in interior design. One student flashed a plan for a jewelry store in Manhattan, while another showed construction plans for a residential project.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase students asked questions about the profession, and received literature about both interior design in general and the program at George Washington.
The group visits area high schools in an effort to educate students about interior architecture and design.
