Exhibit at Pyramid art center honors deceased resident Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005 Pyramid Atlantic Art Center will present an arts installation composed of the words and works of former Washingtonian magazine writer and senior editor Diane Granat of Silver Spring.
Granat, 49, died in August 2004 of a brain tumor.
In creating the installation, Silver Spring resident Francie Hester drew on the handiwork of Granat’s friends and colleagues as they wrapped paper clips bearing words from her published work.
The installation, which also features digital art by Lisa Hill and music by Joan Phalen and Luis Garay, offers audiences the opportunity to see words transformed into art. The exhibit is in the Kunst Vault at Pyramid, 8230 Georgia Ave.
Hester’s piece was influenced by Chinese screens, which she created using linked paper clips wrapped in shreds of magazine paper. Over the past year, groups of friends and family gathered to wrap 25,000 paper clips with words and images taken from articles written by Granat between 1985 and 2004.
‘‘I wanted to create something new and powerful in these words,” Hester said in a news release.
In conjunction with the project, Hester created a limited print. Proceeds will go to the Diane Granat Foundation, which funds early education projects in underserved communities.
