The Magruder football team finished its season strongly Friday night with a 20-8 win over host Northwest. But the outcome was marred by a bench-clearing brawl late in the fourth quarter.
With both teams' reserves in the game, a Magruder player made a tackle along the Northwest sideline. According to an eyewitness, blows were exchanged and both teams became involved.
The Colonels (4-6 overall, 2-3 Montgomery 4A East Division) won the game with a steady ground contribution from Marquis Morgan (26 carries, 147 yards, 1 touchdown) and two Griffin Eldridge scoring passes to Lawrence Miller.
Hassan Dixon closed his Northwest (3-7, 3-3 4A West) tenure over the century mark, carrying 22 times for 101 yards and the Jaguars' only score, a 40-yard run.
Wheaton 36, Einstein 25
Absent tailback Rayshawn Taylor, fullback Ricardo McLeod did it all for the Knights offense against their area rivals. McLeod rushed 22 times for 309 yards, including scoring jaunts of 52, 54 and 63 yards for Wheaton (4-6 overall, 0-2 Montgomery 2A).
He also attempted Wheaton's only pass of the game, completing it for a 34-yard touchdown to K.C. Kreinbihl. For Einstein (5-5, 3-4 Montgomery 3A), Karim Willis scored on runs of 30 and 34 yards. Quarterback Bobby Stouffer ran in a 2-yard touchdown and completed two 2-point conversion passes for Einstein, and Carlos Santana had a 3-yard run for Wheaton.
Walter Johnson 49, Richard Montgomery 0
Michael Pitsenberger rushed for 202 yards and totaled four touchdowns, while Ryan Davis added a pair of touchdown runs to help the Wildcats end the season with a romp over winless Richard Montgomery (0-10, 0-5 4A East).
Pitsenberger rushed for touchdowns of 4, 10 and 50 yards and hauled in an 11-yard scoring pass from Cole Ahnell. Davis added scoring jaunts of 29 and 6 yards as Walter Johnson (3-7 overall, 1-5 4A West) opened up a 28-0 halftime lead and scored seven or more points in every quarter.
Damascus 36, Kennedy 0
In its final tune-up before the 3A West Region playoffs, the Swarmin' Hornets opened up a 22-0 halftime lead and cruised to victory.
Senior tailback Brian Lucas rushed for 104 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries and junior quarterback Connor Frazier threw for a touchdown a 10-yard strike to Brandon Phelps to carry Damasus (8-2, 5-2 Montgomery 3A) offensively. Joel Ross returned a kickoff 79 yards for a score and Alberto Marroquin, the team's place kicker, added an 11-yard scoring run.
The Swarming Hornets will visit second-seeded Linganore in the first round of the playoffs next week. Kennedy finished with a 2-8 record, 2-6 in the division.
Seneca Valley 21, Watkins Mill 15
The Screaming Eagles, shorn of their playoff hopes, struggled to the finish line Friday, trailing lowly Watkins Mill (1-9, 0-7 Montgomery 3A), 8-0 at halftime.
But they came out of the locker room like their old selves. Bernard Wolley scored once and Eddie Cunningham twice to make it 21-8 before Seneca Valley (6-4, 5-2) cruised home.
Blair 37, Northwood 20
The Blazers (3-7, 1-4 4A East) closed the season with a shootout win, as Caleb Furlow scored three touchdowns and Andrew Gondor two, and quarterback Alex Egber threw one to each.
For the Gladiators (3-7, 2-5 Montgomery 3A), quarterback Jimmy Hessler finished his senior season with another big night, throwing for 245 yards and two touchdowns. But he was also intercepted three times, bringing his season total to 23.
Poolesville 35, Kent County 6
The Falcons (3-7, 1-1 Montgomery 2A) closed the season with a big win, running out to a 28-0 halftime advantage. Ben Hessles scored three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. Tyler Holston threw two scoring passes and R.J. King started the game with a 65-yard scoring jaunt.
