With one well-placed strike, Tuscarora High's Michelle Rock delivered a game-changing blow from which visiting Linganore could not recover.
Netting a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead late in the first half of Friday afternoon's Class 3A West Region semifinals, the senior forward completely foiled the Lancers' game plan as the No. 2 Titans prevailed 2-0. Tuscarora advances to face No. 1 Quince Orchard in the West Region championship on Tuesday evening.
"It feels great," Rock said. "It's so exciting and I think we have a really good shot this year."
Things went as planned for much of the opening half. The Lancers willfully fell back into their defensive zone and allowed Tuscarora (12-3-1) to come to them.
But then it all began to go wrong. Dribbling dangerously close to the net, Titans' freshman striker Aaran Parry was taken down within the 18-yard line as the officials signaled for a penalty kick.
"That was part of our strategy to sit back and absorb their pressure," said Linganore head coach Howard Putterman. "We did it well for a while, but again once it is 1-0 we had to break out of that strategy and chase the game."
Lining up, Rock picked a spot in the net. Employing a soft touch, she hit her mark, poking the ball into the lower right corner for the lead with 7:46 remaining before the half.
Tuscarora struck again less than three minutes after intermission when junior midfielder Clare Kelly controlled a loose ball and broke away for a tally at 27:36. The Titans continued to pressure, outshooting Linganore 16-4 while also attempting eight corners.
Linganore's forward pushes began to show promise midway through the second half. The Lancers (8-7-2) earned two corners in roughly a two-minute span but did not manage a shot on either. Senior goalkeeper Edie Riggs was solid in net recording nine saves.
Friday was the second time the Monocacy Valley Athletic League Piedmont Conference rivals have met this year. On Sept. 29 Tuscarora cruised to a 4-0 victory.
Tuesday's match at Quince Orchard promises to be one of the Titans' toughest of the season. The Cougars are 13-2 and have won their two postseason games by a combined score of 10-1. Quince Orchard has advanced to the Class 4A state finale during each of the past three seasons, claiming the 2007 title.
"[Quince Orchard] been in the last three 4A state finals and were definitely a preseason favorite," said Tuscarora head coach Mark Wolcott. "It's the type of game you expect to have in a regional final and we're going to have to play well in our system and be efficient with the chances we're creating."
