The Middletown High football team earned itself a Class 2A West playoff berth Friday evening. Erupting for 36 second-half points, the Knights knocked off rival Walkersville, 42-26, to clinch their fifth straight postseason bid in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League Piedmont Blue Conference showdown.
The No. 4 Knights will open the playoffs at top-seeded Rockville next weekend, while Walkersville was eliminated from postseason contention.
"Our focus was to finish," Middletown head coach Kevin Lynott said.
Down 14-6 at the half, Middletown (6-4, 2-1 conference) kick started its season-defining rally with an 11-play, 63-yard scoring drive on its opening possession of the second half. Quarterback Sam Glushakow connected with Sam Michels for a 20-yard score on fourth-and-15 at 7:39. They teamed again for the two-point conversion as the Knights pulled even 14-14.
Capitalizing on a Will Lyons interception and Walkersville personal foul penalty, Middletown took over at the Lions' 15 less than two minutes later. Wasting no time, senior fullback Cody Cavanaugh plowed his way into the end zone on the subsequent play. Nathaniel Iott added the kick for a 21-14 lead at 5:46 in the third.
"Once we scored once, we just got on a roll and didn't stop," Michels said.
Middletown's next three scores occurred on drives following a Walkersville fumble, interception and botched onsides kick, respectively. The Lions committed five turnovers, leading to five of Middletown touchdowns.
"That was huge," Lynott said. "Their miscues certainly helped us."
Michels also tallied a pair rushing touchdowns. Glushakow added a 29-yard score on the ground while Thomas Pitsenbarger provided a two-yard push into the end zone late in the fourth quarter. Pat Ryan had a pair of picks.
"We came out, it was senior night and we're fighting for a playoff spot," Michels said. "We just came out and executed and did what we had to do."
Walkersville (6-4, 1-2) marched down the field on the contest's initial drive as senior quarterback Jeremy Musselman found classmate Brian Schultz for a 28-yard touchdown. Musselman threw for three scores and also added an impressive fourth quarter 44-yard touchdown scamper, where he broke no less that four tackles.
"We had opportunities to get up early," Walkersville head coach Ryan Hines said. "I think we left points out here on the field in the first half and they took advantage of the mistakes we made in the third quarter."
Jose Depadua and Joe Zuniga also scored for Walkersville.
