Charges are pending against an elderly woman who allegedly was backing up her sport utility vehicle Monday in a Glenn Dale parking lot when she struck a Fort Washington woman who later died, according to Prince George's police.
Around 1:30 p.m., Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department responders arrived at the Vista Gardens Marketplace shopping center parking lot near the intersection of Annapolis Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Highway for a report of a woman trapped under a Ford Explorer, said Mark Brady, a department spokesman.
Karen Prince, 55, of Fort Washington was underneath the SUV, and when responders arrived she was not breathing and had no pulse, Brady said. Responders administered CPR and transported Price to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the SUV, a 77-year-old Lanham woman, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, said Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department.
It is not yet clear how fast the SUV was backing up or why the driver didn't see Price, Rodriguez said. The crash remains under investigation.
