Bowie girls advance with shutout
From staff reports |
On the strength of three goals by Maddie Sims, the Bowie High School girls' soccer team earned a trip to the 4A South Region semifinals with a 4-0 win against Oxon Hill on Tuesday afternoon.
Bowie coach Aaron Hankey said Oxon Hill's performance led to a relatively close game, given his team's 10-0 win against the Clippers in a Sept. 22 regular season game.
"I would say the biggest difference between this one and the first game was that [Oxon Hill] came out hard and they were very aggressive," Hankey said. "They played a solid game.
Sims and senior Mary Randolph tallied first-half goals, and Sims added two more in the second half. Sims, Kristi Hepner, Erika Monroe and Alison Ryan each had assists. The Bulldogs pounded Oxon Hill with 24 shots, 14 on goal, but Hankey said there was room for improvement.
"A few things need to be tweaked," he said. "For starters, we needed to have a better first touch on the ball. They have to understand to take these playoffs one game at a time because if you lose one, you're out."
Top-seeded Bowie (13-1) has not lost since a Sept. 8 defeat at Arundel High. The Bulldogs will play host to Henry A. Wise (9-4) in the 4A South semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday. Parkdale (6-7-1) will visit Eleanor Roosevelt (10-1) at 3 p.m. Friday in the other regional semifinal.
Wise advanced to the semifinals with an 8-0 win against Bladensburg on Tuesday. Tracee Morgan scored four times and had an assist for the Pumas, while Christen Blair added three goals and three assists. Lauren Robertson had a goal and an assist.
Tuesday's game was Bowie's first since the Bulldogs cruised to a 10-0 victory against Gwynn Park in the county championship game Oct. 27 at High Point High School.
The Bulldogs did all of their scoring in the first half against Gwynn Park, including seven goals in the first 20 minutes. Bowie spent the second half concentrating on its passing. It was the Bulldogs' second consecutive county championship.
Randolph scored four goals and Simms added three more, while Lisa Ruyter, Marissa Green and Taylor James each scored once. Green also had three assists and Hepner had two. Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Jenkins needed only six saves to record the shutout.
