The city of Bowie began its annual leaf-collection service this week.
The city's public works department picks up the leaves piled at curbs and transports them to a recycling company, where the leaves are turned into mulch, Mayor G. Frederick Robinson said.
The city has scheduled leaf pickup in specific Bowie communities through mid-December. Residents should rake leaves into piles at the curb by 7 a.m. on the pickup date specified for their neighborhood. Collection will take place from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the scheduled days.
Crews will continue to work if it rains, but in the event of snow or ice storms, collection will be temporarily suspended because trucks and crews will be sent to salt or plow city streets.
Crews will visit some sections of the city on two consecutive days because of the expected volume of leaves to be collected. Crews will visit areas a second day if collections are not completed on the first scheduled day.
The program costs the city approximately $80,000 annually, Robinson said.
The collection is offered as a convenience to residents and is "a pretty well appreciated program," he said.
Leaf collection crews will visit the these neighborhoods on the following dates:
