A retired Army intelligence officer with 20 years of service will be the featured speaker as the City of Rockville celebrates Veterans Day at 11 a.m. Nov. 11.
Lt. Col. Denise A. DeLawter, a veteran who served two tours in the 82nd Airborne Division, one tour in Korea and her final tour at the Pentagon, was selected to speak on Veterans Day from among numerous nominations, the city reported.
A Rockville resident and Richard Montgomery High School graduate, DeLawter now works with the Department of Homeland Security.
American Legion Post 86 of Rockville will lead the wreath-laying ceremony and the post's Honor Guard will lead the 21-gun salute.
The ceremony will be held at Veterans Park, located at the intersection of Rockville Pike and Veirs Mill Road. Parking is available at St. Mary's Catholic Church and school or at Sandy Spring Bank, located between Fleet Street and Route 355.
City Hall will be closed and other city facilities also will close or operate on a limited schedule in honor of the holiday:
-No money will be required for city-owned parking meters or garages.
-Recycling and refuse will be collected on regular schedules.
-Twinbrook Community Recreation Center and Thomas Farm Community Center will be open regular hours (6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.).
-Lincoln Park Community Center will be open regular hours (9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.).
-Rockville Senior Center will be open (8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for drop-in activities. Lunch will not be served. There will be no transportation or programs.
-Rockville Swim and Fitness Center will be open on its regular schedule.
-RedGate Municipal Golf Course will be open under winter hours (first tee time at 9 a.m.).
-Croydon Creek Nature Center will be open regular hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
-Rockville Civic Center Park offices, F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre box office and Glenview Mansion will be closed.
