Poolesville's commissioners approved contracts to build a band shell and to develop a parcel of land that will house a skate park and other recreational facilities.
The commissioners voted 4-0 to award a contract to Bruchey Builders Inc. of Frederick to not exceed $238,000 to build a band shell with bathrooms at Whalen Commons park at their Monday night meeting. The project may cost an additional $18,000 if rock needs to be removed during construction.
Vice President Jerry Klobukowski said he abstained from the vote because he is working with one of the three bidders on a construction project. Bruchey Builders constructed Poolesville's new Town Hall.
The brick, custom-designed band shell will take about 180 days to build and must be completed by June 30, Town Engineer John Strong said. The project is expected to cost $317,000. Initial plans called for a prefabricated structure costing $195,000 but did not include bathrooms, which would have been added later, Town Manager Wade Yost said.
The commissioners voted 4-1 to award a $155,000 contract to Ross Contracting Inc. of Mount Airy to prepare a parcel of land on Wootton Avenue owned by the town for future recreational uses. Klobukowski was opposed.
The town is building a $150,000 skate park on the site, which will be developed with other recreational facilities such as a playground and possibly a community center at a later time. The contract includes infrastructure like grading and stormwater management.
The commissioners unanimously voted to spend $5,000 to upgrade the town's Web site, www.ci.poolesville.md.us, which was designed in the late 1990s.
The commissioners also introduced an ordinance to require mortgage companies, banks or other entities to notify the town in writing when they intend to foreclose on a home in Poolesville. A public hearing will be held at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at Town Hall, 19721 Beall St.
