Police had previously thought a 25-year-old Washington, D.C., man had been shot after two men tried to rob him as he was leaving the Gold's Gym at 8661 Colesville Road in Silver Spring Monday evening at 5:55 p.m. But further investigation revealed the man was not a patron of the gym and was allegedly involved in a drug deal, according to a news release from Montgomery County Police.
The victim had previously told police two men tried to rob him and after he fought them off they shot at him, said Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman.
"Very early reports were made by the victim so we had to go with that; it was very preliminary," Starks said. "After we spoke with him and an acquaintance, detectives started to wonder if there was more to it."
It is unclear whether the victim knew the suspects and had planned to meet near the gym for a drug deal and exactly what went wrong that resulted in shots, Starks said. What police do know is after some kind of altercation, one of the suspects shot the victim in the leg.
The bullet entered his left leg first, and then went through to his right leg, the release said. He was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and was released later that night.
The first suspect is described as a black male, 6 feet tall, 130 pounds, bald with a beard and side burns. The second suspect is described as a clean-shaven black male with a teardrop tattoo on his face who was wearing a hat and a gray hooded sweatshirt.
