I strongly object to having to pay for parking in order to use my local public library. I not only object, but I resent being charged.
Rockville and Montgomery County residents pay plenty in taxes to support the local community. The charge for library parking is nothing more than a rip-off of the community. This fee is nothing less than a service charge.
The 12 free parking "times" is a joke. That free parking plan is time-limited, and is suggestive of a poor and inadequate compromise.
Claiming that it is "only" $1 per hour undercuts the philosophy of what has happened; once the leak starts, then the water can flood in later. What will the charge be in a year from now? Five years? There is a principle involved here that must be recognized.
We did not have to pay for parking at the old library; why did the advocate(s) of the new library not provide adequate assurance, from the beginning, that parking would be free? The Gazette's Oct. 21 editorial states that Rockville City Council candidate Tom Moore was such an advocate (you promote this as a positive). What does he have to say about this?
While the new library is undoubtedly superior, I would prefer to have continued to use the old library so as to not be charged for the services.
The new extended hours for parking charges also relate to the downtown shops. Why should anybody go to a downtown store or restaurant when one can obtain the same service at a mall or on [Rockville] Pike, without the service charge?
What does the downtown area offer that justifies the parking charge? The answer is "nothing" that can't be obtained elsewhere.
What is needed is some action to reverse this travesty.
