Gaithersburg voters continue streaming to the polls today to select a mayor and two councilmen to lead them through the next four years.
Polls are open until 8 p.m.
Voter turnout in Gaithersburg could surpass that of 2007, when 3,438 residents cast ballots for the city's highest turnout ever, according to City Attorney Lynn Board. Unofficial records show that by 3 p.m. today 2,049 residents had cast ballots.
The city has 28,098 voters, said city spokeswoman Britta Monaco.
"I've been to all the polling places but City Hall," said Mayor Sidney A. Katz at 1 p.m. "I'd certainly like the turnout to be a little higher, but you always appreciate the voters that you get."
Katz and his wife, Sally voted at 1 p.m. at a polling place at Potomac Oaks Condominiums on Quince Orchard Boulevard. His challenger, Richard Koch, voted at 9 a.m. in the Kentlands, where Koch, his wife, Elaine, and Katz greeted voters.
The mayor has his first challenger in eight years. Councilman Henry F. Marraffa Jr. and Councilman Michael A. Sesma are defending their seats from challenger Tom Rowse, a Deer Park resident and businessman.
