With Suitland holding a 13-6 lead at halftime, Shields' fears appeared to be well-founded. But the Suitland team that County 4A League opponents have come to recognize as one of the area's best broke the game open in the second half, ultimately moving to 8-1 with a 39-6 win.
"We really had some spots where we weren't focused," Shields said. "But they rallied to put it all together."
Quarterback Devonte' Lindsey completed 48- and 32-yard touchdown tosses to lead the way. Suitland's six touchdowns were scored by six different players, as Shields distributed the wealth on offense.
The Rams took a lead they would never surrender on their second possession when running back Dontrewell Kelley scored on a 3-yard run.
Parkdale responded with a well-orchestrated 10-play, 70-yard drive. Quarterback Marcus Kennedy hit receiver Mike Carter for a 5-yard score. Although Kennedy's pass on the two-point conversion fell incomplete, the six points denied Suitland's bid for its third consecutive shutout.
Keith Brown's athletic interception of Kennedy early in the second quarter gave Suitland the ball at Parkdale's 26-yard line. After taking a sack, Lindsey heaved the ball toward the end zone from 48 yards out, and receiver Levern Jacobs reached forward and grasped the ball with his fingertips, hauling the pass in to give Suitland a 7-point cushion.
Suitland started the second half at midfield, and running back Kevin Williams scored a 5-yard touchdown run 11 plays later to put the Rams ahead, 21-6.
Parkdale's ensuing drive fizzled at its own 29-yard line. A 3-yard punt gave Suitland the ball at the Panthers' 32, and Lindsey found receiver Jason Johnson in the end zone on the next play to make it a three-score game.
Brown plunged in from the 1-yard line early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead before running back Anthony Norman's late 6-yard touchdown run finished the scoring.
"This was the second game in a row they gave up in the second half," Parkdale coach Richard Holzer said of his squad, which lost 40-14 to Eleanor Roosevelt last week. "They knew they were out of the playoffs the last two weeks. So as soon as things don't go their way, this team gives up."
Both teams will wrap the regular season schedule next Saturday. Suitland will travel to Eleanor Roosevelt and Parkdale will play at Bladensburg.
