In one of the biggest upsets in Montgomery County this season, Blair, behind the play of running back Dayne Bolt and quarterback Victor Wang, defeated Damascus 28-26 in overtime Friday night to improve to 5-4 on the season.
Bolt, back from an ankle injury he suffered in week five, rushed for 222 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. On the two biggest plays of the game, however, he served as a decoy.
With the score tied at 20 at the end of regulation, Wang, who scored three touchdowns, faked an inside handoff to Bolt and raced 10 yards for a 26-20 advantage. Wang did the same thing on the team's 2-point attempt for an 8-point lead.
"They sucked in on Dayne and [Wang] ran on the outside," Blazers assistant coach Adrian Kelly said. "He made the right read to pull the ball back out. Victor played an excellent game. He's been a good senior leader and a captain."
Wang ran for two scores and 36 yards on six carries for the game, and passed for 42 yards on four completions, including an 8-yard touchdown to tight end Andy Holmes.
Damascus (6-3) scored on its overtime drive when quarterback Greg Stanton (9 of 12 passes, 126 yards) found Brandon Phelps from 10 yards out. But Holmes (14 tackles, 2 sacks) burst through the line on the ensuing 2-point conversion attempt and tackled Stanton to end the game. Kelly said Blair went for two because the team's main kicker was unavailable and an earlier extra point try went awry.
Damascus was without running back Brian Lucas, who rushed for over 100 yards and a score in a 13-7 loss to Seneca Valley the week before. Joey Laurienza paced the team on the ground with 85 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Mark Smith also scored a rushing touchdown.
Georgetown Prep 38, Pallotti 0
Georgetown Prep concluded its non-league schedule with a resounding win over Pallotti Friday afternoon. Little Hoyas coach Dan Paro, whose team improved to 7-2, said his starters were lifted after taking a 14-0 first-quarter lead.
Prep eventually finished the first quarter with a 28-point advantage and led 31-0 at halftime.
"The good thing is everyone had an opportunity to play," Paro said. "Our starters played well in the short time they were in. Now we're getting ready for Loyola, the second-best team in the state."
Magruder 50, Blake 23
Senior Marquis Morgan ran for two touchdowns and juniors Griffin Eldridge and Karim Jones hooked up for two more as the Colonels eased to their fourth win.
Morgan rushed for 131 yards on 13 carries, and Eldridge had his best game to date, completing 7 of 11 passes for 163 yards and the two scoring passes to Jones. The Colonels racked up 487 yards of total offense. Seniors Chris Ralli and Renan Guedes added scoring runs, as did Eldridge.
Blake compiled 354 yards of offense, but lost three fumbles. Both teams will close the 2008 season Friday, with Blake visiting Rockville and Magruder hosting Gaithersburg.
Paint Branch 36, Watkins Mill 6
The Panthers (6-3) took a much-needed step forward in their quest for a Class 3A playoff berth, rushing for nearly 250 yards. Fullback Franklyn Paris led the way with 95 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries, while halfback Frankie Poulos scored on 9- and 29-yard runs.
Junior Ivan Tagoe pitched in with 71 yards rushing and 31 receiving, while safety Torian Henderson returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown.
Paint Branch now controls its own destiny. A win on the road Friday at Damascus would put them in the postseason for the first time since 2000.
Wheaton 23, Kennedy 13
The Knights (2-7) earned their second-straight victory, rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Fullback Robert Wilson, who rushed 23 times for 158 yards, scored on a 6-yard run, while quarterback Juan Rosas (4 of 7, 110 yards) found wideout Renan Josefino for a 60-yard touchdown to ice the game. Josefino accounted for Wheaton's other touchdown, a 22-yard grab from Rosas in the first half. Rosas also added 76 yards rushing.
Wheaton closes the season at Bethesda-Chevy Chase.
Northwood 28, Walter Johnson 23
Gladiators senior receiver Keith Hudson caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jimmy Hessler late in the fourth quarter to help Northwood rebound from a 23-22 halftime deficit and clinch its second win of 2008.
Hudson scored three of Northwood's four touchdowns Friday: a 45-yard reception in the first quarter, an 85-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and the game-winning catch in the fourth. He finished with 168 yards on 13 catches. Hessler completed 28 of 44 pass attempts for 309 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior running back Lydell Baker scored the Gladiators' fourth touchdown on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.
Walter Johnson (1-8) rushed for 201 yards in the first half but was unable to duplicate that performance in the second half Friday.
Rockville 31, Poolesville 0
Rockville sophomore running back Crusoe Gongbay rushed for 274 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries to help the Rams (5-4) snap a three-game losing streak.
Gongbay scored four total touchdowns, three in the first half. Senior Robbie Parker put Rockville ahead 7-0 early in the first quarter on a 7-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Peter Nalle.
Gongbay scored three touchdowns in the second quarter on 37-, 44- and 3-yard runs. He added the final touchdown on a 64-yard scamper in the third quarter.
The Falcons dropped to 0-9 with Friday's defeat; Poolesville has been shut out six times this fall.
Einstein 54, B-CC 30
The Titans' Malcolm Crockett ran wild on the ground again, countering a 200-yard passing effort from Barons quarterback Jake Boross. B-CC also ran for over 100 yards, but Einstein got the better of the shootout.
The Titans (5-4) close their season at home Friday against Seneca Valley, while the Barons (1-9) host Wheaton.
