A goal by Oxon Hill senior forward Adriana Featherstone late in the first half set the stage for two second-half goals by Cameron Mitchell, which lifted the Clippers into the quarterfinals. Oxon Hill (8-5) will visit defending region champion and top seed Bowie at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
High Point got one goal from sophomore Kayla Cyr and another from freshman Kelly Hernandez on an assist from Cyr, but the hosts did not score in the second half and suffered their second setback to the Clippers this fall.
"We did a nice job getting the ball to our forwards in the second half," said Oxon Hill coach Casey York. "When Cameron can get the ball up top, she's tough to stop. That goal by Adriana late in the first half gave us a big lift going into halftime. In the second half, we stayed focused and we made some really good passes. Cameron came through for us in a big way. She's our leading scorer. We'll see how we do against Bowie. We lost to them early in the season, but we're a much better team right now."
Mitchell nearly got the equalizer 2 minutes into the second half when she went past the High Point defense, but pushed a shot wide of the goal. But 2 minutes later, Mitchell redeemed herself when she took a lead pass from senior Lindsey Felder, went down the middle and drilled a low shot past Eagles' keeper Linda Herrarte.
Oxon Hill continued to dictate play through the next 25 minutes and finally forged ahead when Mitchell took a throw-in from Estefanie Zuniga on the left sideline, dribbled past the defense and sent a low shot into the right corner of the net for a 3-2 lead.
"That was just a great throw-in by Estefanie," Mitchell said. "When the ball came to me, I knew I had to score. Even when we were down 2-0 we just talked about staying patient. We have 10 seniors on this team and most of us were out there the second half. We didn't want to see our season and career end. We came out strong in the second half. Now we have to play that way the whole game against Bowie."
High Point started the game with the clear intent of avenging a 4-2 setback the Eagles suffered against Oxon Hill during the regular season. Cyr took a lead pass from Hernandez and, got around Oxon Hill senior defender Christa Kamon, curled back toward the middle and drilled a low shot into the right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead 6 minutes into the game. Ten minutes later, Cyr again got past the Oxon Hill fullbacks and sent a low crossing pass to Hernandez deep in the penalty area that the Eagles' freshman was able to nudge into the net for a 2-0 lead.
But Oxon Hill controlled the last 20 minutes of the first half, getting 10 shots on goal and cutting its deficit in half when Featherstone sent a free kick past Herrarte.
