County Judge reassigned to administration

Monday, Oct. 31, 2005

After being temporarily barred from hearing domestic violence cases, District Court judge Richard A. Palumbo has been assigned to administrative chambers duties, according to Rita Buettner of the Court Information Office for the Maryland Judiciary.

The assignment was effective from Oct 26 until further notice.

Palumbo has been heavily criticized for revoking a protective order placed against Roger Hargrave, against the wishes of his estranged wife Yvette Cade. Weeks after the order was rescinded, Hargrave went to the T-Mobile store where Cade worked, doused her with gasoline and set her on fire. She is currently hospitalized and Hargrave is charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault.

Reasons for the reassignment have not been revealed and the matter is under review by Chief Judge of the District Court Ben C. Clyburn.

Under state law, only the governor and the state legislature have the ability to permanently remove Palumbo.
