If the alarm operates properly, residents will receive coupons for complimentary popcorn and soda at AMC Movie Theatres. If the alarm does not operate, firefighters will ensure the homeowner has a working smoke alarm before they leave, according to a fire department news release.
Firefighters will visit single-family homes starting at 6 p.m. Saturday and if they have coupons left over, they will continue Sunday morning. For homeowner safety, firefighters will be in uniform and have a photo ID available to show upon request. A fire department vehicle will also be visible within the community.
Firefighters from each station will target homes that do not have built-in sprinkler systems, said department spokesman Mark Brady.
The fire department is asking residents to install fresh batteries in their alarm now in preparation for firefighters' inspections. Residents are eligible to receive a fresh battery and new smoke alarm installed in their home, free of charge, by calling the department's smoke alarm hotline at 301-864-7233.
