In an effort to provide shoes to poor people in Haiti, the Greater Mount Nebo African Methodist Episcopal Church in Bowie is holding a shoe drive through Saturday.
The church is collecting as many new and slightly worn shoes as possible, which will be distributed to Haitians in rural villages in early November, said the Rev. Jonathan L. Weaver, pastor of the church.
"This is a great opportunity for persons to provide help by donating an item we take for granted, shoes," Weaver said in a statement. "There are literally hundreds of thousands of Haitians living in rural villages who can't afford shoes, who walk everyday with their feet uncovered and unprotected, exposing themselves to the threat of all kinds of illnesses and diseases."
Anyone who would like to donate shoes to the effort can drop them off at the church through Saturday or contact the Rev. Roslyn Roberts at 301-249-7545. The church is located at 1001 Old Mitchellville Road.

Scout earns high rank
through environmental work
Michael Allegrezza, the son of Kim and Anthony Allegrezza of Bowie, and a member of Boy Scout Troop 1009, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
He was presented with the rank Oct. 10 during his Eagle Court of Honor, at Christian Community Presbyterian Church, according to his father.
In order to receive the rank of Eagle Scout, Michael, 17, completed a project that involved setting up a wildlife education center and habitat at Tulip Grove Elementary School. Michael led a group of volunteers who installed plantings, feeders and houses and natural habitat for birds and other wildlife at the school.
"We made some bird and animal houses and planted berry bushes," Michael said. "I thought that would be cool to do at the school and figured I would get the younger generation interested in environmental issues."
The enhancements qualified Tulip Grove as a nationally Certified Community Wildlife Habitat.
Michael, a senior at Bowie High School, was active in Cub Scouts Pack 1009 at Tulip Grove Elementary, where he earned the Arrow of Light award, the highest honor for a Cub Scout. He became a Boy Scout in May 2003 and joined Troop 1009 at Christian Community Presbyterian Church.
"I had been working at this a long time and it was a major accomplishment in my life," he said of earning the rank.
