Paint Branch High School Academy of Science and Media is hosting a Northeast Consortium Open House from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. November 6 at the school, 14121 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville.
The open house is for eighth-grade students and their families involved in the choice process. All are welcome to tour the facility and learn about the Science and Media Signature program. Administrators, teachers, parents and students will be available to answer questions about the school, academic programs, extracurricular activities and the sports program offered at Paint Branch.
A variety of areas will be showcased including innovative science programs, medical careers, pharmacy, television production, radio, print publications, music, the Gilder Lehrman American History Scholars Program and Naval Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC). Math, music, art and foreign languages will also be represented as well as the Paint Branch Academy programs including the Academy of Finance, Academy of Engineering Technology, Restaurant Management and Child Development.
Students, teachers and coaches from various extracurricular and athletic programs will also be available so that prospective students and their families can gather information about the activities and sports programs offered at Paint Branch. The event will begin 7 p.m. with a brief auditorium assembly followed by tours of the building. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the tours.
Destination ImagiNation team visits Capitol Hill
Members of the Benjamin Banneker Middle School Destination ImagiNation team demonstrated their talents in creativity, teamwork and problem solving for about 50 leaders in state and federal government Oct. 7 during DI Back-to-School Day on Capitol Hill.
The Burtonsville school participated in the daylong program in which government representatives had the opportunity to visit Destination ImagiNation displays and talk to team members about how DI challenges and benefits them.
This marks the fourth year for the sixth-grade grade team, whose members are Aman Anand, Nick Bazis, Kaitlyn Chitvaranund, Josh Doane-Malotte, Ian Edge, Austin Williams and Stephanie Woodson.
Paint Branch Marching Band takes top honors
The Paint Branch Marching Band won first place in Group I and were recognized for best Drumline, Colorguard, Music, Visual and Overall Effect in their division in the U.S. Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) Marching Competition held Saturday at Northwest High School in Germantown. The band's score of 80.6 was an 11-point improvement from its competition Oct. 11 and was the marching band's best score since 2004.
The marching band includes students in grades 9-12, with 20 total members including Bummah Ndeh, Eric Rosario, Jennifer Stanton, Ryan Anderson, Robert Johnson III, Alex Measday, Annie Vital, Kavi Girdhar, Cyrell Lawson, Jordan Lloyd, Edward Wilson, Marly Diallo, Amanda Lay and Kade Nicholson.
The marching band is led by senior Drum Major Jong Park. Section leaders include Jessica Tran for colorguard; Steven Friedman, percussion; Eric Kuhn, brass; Marthe Ambroise, woodwinds; and Claudy St. Paul as the field captain.
The band is directed by Sean Kirchhoff in his second year as the band's director. He is assisted by Band Instructor Dorothy Lee and Colorguard Instructor Laura Hoffmaster.
Latino parent, student group holds soccer fundraiser
P.A.L.A: Padres y Alumnos Latinos en Accion (Latino Parents and Students in Action), a parents' group at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, will hold an indoor Latino Festival and Soccer Tournament from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 at the school 201 Valley Brook Drive. The fundraising event will include music and food. This group advocates for improving the educational and social opportunities for children; promoting parental involvement in academic success; facilitation knowledge and utilization of the school system by parents; working together with the PTSA and the school to improve the education of all children at Springbrook High School.
Dance-a-thon benefits

A dance-a-thon fundraiser for Taylor Law, a third-grader at Cloverly Elementary School in Silver Spring who is battling leukemia, will be held 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 15 at Elite Dance Studio and Supply, located in the Cloverly Towne Center at the corner of Briggs Chaney Road and New Hampshire Avenue in Cloverly. Animated Poems' to be broadcast on cable
Three poems written by Paint Branch High School students were put to video with soundtracks for a short documentary called "Animated Poems." The videos, "Swing, Scat, Scamper," "When My Hot Green Moon Froze" and "Sweet Dreams" showcased in "Animated Poems," will be broadcast on Montgomery County Public Schools Instructional TV Channel 34 (Comcast), Channel 36 (Verizon FiOS) and Channel 89 (RCN) 7 p.m. Nov. 10, 7 p.m. Nov. 11, 6 p.m. Nov. 12, 6 p.m. Nov. 13, and 7 p.m. Nov. 14.

William Tyler Page Elementary hosts international night

Indoor picnic fundraiser
to benefit families in need
Silver Spring-based nonprofit A Wider Circle will hold "The World's Largest Indoor Picnic," a family-friendly fundraiser to help local families in need, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Julia Bindeman Suburban Center, 11810 Falls Road, Potomac. The event will feature golf driving cages with professional analysis, a moon bounce, supervised activities, a catered dinner by Whole Foods Market, a silent auction, miniature golf and gaming with Wii.
The picnic is free for children age 16 and younger and $25 for adults in advance; cost is $35 for adults at the door.
