Questionable photo choice
|
Photo could dissuade
H1N1 prevention
We just want to register our disappointment with The Gazette's decision to publish the photo of Victoria Marquez receiving a nasal application of the H1N1 vaccine. She appears to be in great agony, when in fact a nasal application is not at all painful. Such a photo will certainly dissuade people from taking this course of action, when in fact children are considered to be at high risk. People need to be encouraged to make an intelligent and informed decision about a course of action. This color photo, prominently displayed on the front page, makes the case that recipient will suffer. To us, perhaps this is another example of the media's frequent need to be dramatic rather than objective reporting.

Irresponsible image
The picture on the cover of the Oct. 14 [edition of the] Potomac/North Potomac Gazette is irresponsible. The picture depicts a 2-year-old in discomfort as she is given the nasal spray. This could be seen as promoting a fear of immunization, due to cultural and religious beliefs, and/or a lack of education about immunization.
