Led by Ryan Quinn's 101 rushing yards, the Churchill football team rebounded from last week's disappointing loss to Magruder with an 18-6 win over Whitman.
Quarterback Curran Chabra contributed with 132 yards on 8 of 18 passing. Alex Kantor and Quinn scored the two touchdowns, while Bryan Crutchfield added a 30-yard field goal for the Bulldogs (6-2 overall, 4-1 Montgomery 4A West Division).
Churchill's defense dominated and did not allow a point until the last play of the game, when Whitman (3-5, 2-3 4A West) quarterback Henry Kuhn connected with wide receiver Anthony Young-Wiseman for a 70-yard Hail Mary touchdown.
"We missed opportunities in first half, but the defense played pretty well," said Churchill coach Greg Neuendorf. "It was a sloppy win, but a win is a win."
Gaithersburg 33, Watkins Mill 0
Running backs B.J. Marshall and Axel Ofori combined to rush for 145 yards, and the Trojan defense pitched its first shutout of the season against Gaithersburg graduate and former assistant coach Joe Rydzewski's team.
Sophomore quarterback Zach Fetters, starting his second game, completed five passes on the night, three for touchdowns. Senior Serge Kona caught two and returned a punt to the 1-yard line, setting up a Fetters sneak for Gaithersburg's first score.
The Trojans (5-3 overall, 3-0 Montgomery 4A East Division) were up 12-0 at halftime.
"In the first half, we were tremendously sloppy — personal fouls, miscommunications," Gaithersburg coach Kreg Kephart said. "We talked at halftime about establishing something on the opening drive of the second half, and the offense did a nice job with that. The defense was stellar all night."
The Trojans' other scores came on a 9-yard pass from Fetters to senior Ketrell Budd and a 47-yard interception return by junior Travon Carroll. Senior defensive end Sean Stanley was held out of the game to nurse various bumps and bruises in advance of a critical senior-night showdown next week against undefeated Sherwood.
Watkins Mill (2-6, 2-4 Montgomery 3A) has now lost four straight games. The Wolverines visit Paint Branch next Saturday.
Paint Branch 40, Blake 9
Quarterback Tracy Martin had arguably his finest game in a Panthers uniform, passing for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 102 and two more scores.
The junior did most of his damage in the second quarter, scoring on runs of 38 and 3 yards while tossing a 50-yard touchdown to wide receiver Darnell Horton (3 catches, 92 yards).
Franklyn Paris (7 carries, 70 yards) scored the game's first touchdown on a 1-yard run, while senior David Smith added a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Kwabena Asante rushed for 132 yards for Blake, and scored its lone touchdown on a 4-yard, fourth-quarter run.
B-CC 40, Poolesville 14
A week after Bethesda-area neighbor Walter Johnson picked up its first win of the season against Poolesville, B-CC (1-7 overall, 0-5 Montgomery 3A West Division) pulled the same trick.
"I feel about 30 pounds lighter," B-CC coach Joe Allen said. "We started out kind of sluggish because of the long ride. But once we established things we were able to consistently drive the ball down the field. … Our gameplan coming in was to run the ball on the edges because we knew they couldn't handle our athletes in space."
Sophomore running back Matt Bookman broke out for 230 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, and was pulled with 7 minutes left in the game. Senior linebacker Noah Joseph made 14 tackles, including eight solo and one behind the line of scrimmage, going over the 100 mark after just eight games.
B-CC led just 14-6 at halftime, on Bookman scoring runs of 21 and 13 yards. The Barons added four rushing touchdowns in the second half, and quarterback Jake Boross (6 of 12, 75 yards) found Sean Lee on a 19-yard touchdown pass.
Poolesville's scores both came on the legs of Jason Beck, who rushed for 171 yards.
Blair 27, Kennedy 8
Quarterback Victor Wang tossed a pair of touchdown passes and running backs Keith Ayensu and Pablo Moreno each added rushing scores to lift Blair to 4-4 on the season and end a three-game losing streak for the Blazers.
Wang (3 of 4, 52 yards) hooked up with Andrew Gondor for a 7-yard touchdown and with Jonathan Haughton from 29 yards out for another score. Ayensu broke loose for a 77-yard scoring scamper and Moreno (77 yards) reached the end zone from 11 yards for Blair, which led 21-8 at halftime.
The early advantage allowed coaches to rest their top player, Dayne Bolt (56 rushing yards) for the final three quarters in hopes of making him 100 percent for next weekend's contest with Damascus (6-2).
Defensively, linebackers Andy Holmes and Haughton combined for 17 tackles and five sacks. Holmes also contributed three tackles for a loss.
Clarksburg 34, Einstein 6
Clarksburg improved to 8-0 with its 18th-consecutive regular-season victory.
Avery Graham (25-yard reception) and Patrick Isaacs (25-yard run) each scored a touchdown in the second quarter to give Clarksburg a 13-0 halftime advantage.
Mark Small, who rushed for 189 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, Jamaal Germany (43-yard fumble return) and Isaacs (25-yard run), scored second-half touchdowns.
North Point 34, Rockville 14
Trailing 20-0 at halftime, the Rockets were staring at a repeat of last year's 42-0 loss to the Eagles, from Charles County.
But Rockville (4-4) rebounded well in the second half. Sophomore running back Crusoe Gongbay scored on a 21-yard run and Josue Gaitan caught a 4-yard reception to put the Rams on the board in the second half.
Quince Orchard 42, Walter Johnson 6
In a meeting of two teams that had long streaks snapped last week, Quince Orchard bounced back from its first loss in 20 games, while Walter Johnson couldn't follow up on its first on-field win in 36.
