Prince George’s Gazette Sports Staff High School Football Pick ‘Em — Week 7

Can you smell the playoff fever in the air? This week’s county schedule serves up a few games that be sending that flavor into the breeze.

Oxon Hill travels to Bowie in a crucial matchup of 5-2 teams. Bowie, which still must face Eleanor Roosevelt and Charles H. Flowers, needs to win to stop the freefall that began two weeks ago with a 30-6 loss to Parkdale. Last week, the Bulldogs managed just six points again in a 19-6 defeat at the hands of Suitland. With the 4A South playoff standings shaken up by a spate of forfeits, Bowie may be able to make it into the playoffs with a 6-4 record, but at 5-5, it would be next to impossible. Forfeits aside, Roosevelt and Flowers remain two of the strongest teams in the area and pose a brutal end-of-season challenge to the Bulldogs. Oxon Hill, meanwhile, must still face Parkdale and Henry A. Wise, both of which are playoff contenders.

Speaking of those Raiders and Jaguars, Flowers and Roosevelt get together at Flowers High in Springdale on Saturday. With all those marks in the loss column between the two teams, you have to step back and realize that between them they have lost just one game on the field — Roosevelt’s 15-14 defeat against Suitland — and have allowed a grand total of 75 points. If not for three forfeits, Flowers would be undefeated. But with those three losses, the Jaguars face a difficult run of games to end the season. Next week they take on unbeaten Suitland, which has been looking like a team that doesn’t plan on relinquishing the Class 4A state title. And then Flowers closes the season against a Bowie team that will desperately need a win.

High school football fans in the southern part of the county also have a marquee matchup this week, as Surrattsville heads to Brandywine to take on Gwynn Park. Surrattsville is in strange territory with all of this playoff talk. The Clinton school has never sent its football team to the playoffs, but it looks like it’s going to happen this year, as the Hornets currently hold the third of four playoff spots available in the 1A South Region. After Saturday’s game, Surrattsville (6-1) will close the season against middle-of-the-road teams, Largo and Crossland. The Hornets are led by running back Davin Meggett’s 17 rushing touchdowns, but they’ve also allowed just 71 points in seven games. Meanwhile, Gwynn Park is in a battle for a spot in the 2A South playoffs. Last week’s come-from-behind win against Urbana was a big lift, but Gwynn Park travels to unbeaten Friendly next week and closes the season against arch-rival Frederick Douglass. Coincidentally, Gwynn Park and Douglass are in a dogfight for the fourth and final 2A South playoff position.

Week 8. Playoff fever. Yeah, now it’s getting interesting.
