Here's what happened around the county in Thursday's regional quarterfinal field hockey action:
4A West Region
Walter Johnson 8, Gaithersburg 0
Georgina Beven scored five goals and assisted on two others to guide second-seeded Walter Johnson over No. 7 Gaithersburg in Bethesda.
Emily Kleinburd, Barbara Gamiz and Kat Gratton added a goal apiece for the Wildcats (10-3), who opened up a 6-0 halftime advantage en route to the lopsided victory. Four of those first-half goals came in the first 10 minutes.
Walter Johnson, which fired off 29 shots, will now play third-seeded Churchill (10-3) Tuesday in a regional semifinal contest.
Churchill 2, Linganore 0
Shaking off a slow start, Churchill (10-3) received second-half goals from team leaders Jenna Hawk and Shannon Disbrow to upend sixth-seeded Linganore and reach that semifinal showdown with Walter Johnson.
"We started off flat," said Bulldogs coach Monica Malanoski. "I think the girls thought that Linganore was going to be an easier game. They turned it on about 20 minutes into the game."
Thomas Johnson 1, Northwest 0 (3-0 penalty strokes)
Northwest coach Randy Hostetter said his team played one of its best games of the 2008 season, but it wasn't enough against fourth-seeded Thomas Johnson out of Frederick County.
Northwest, which fired off 13 shots, finished the season at 4-9.
Thomas Johnson (8-5) will play top-seeded Quince Orchard (9-3) Tuesday in a 4A West Region semifinal contest. The Cougars received a pair of byes into the semifinals.
4A South Region
Springbrook 3, Blair 2
In a reprise of the teams' regular-season finale, Springbrook used goals from Rachel Browning, Ebony Turner and Ferin Richardson to pull away from a scrappy Blair squad.
Tied 1-1 at halftime, the second-seeded Blue Devils (11-1-1) took the lead for good at 2-1 with 23 minutes, 15 seconds left in the match on a penalty stroke goal by Turner. The stroke was awarded when a clear goal was stopped by a defender's leg.
Richardson extended that lead to 3-1 off an assist from Browning with 11:22 remaining in the second half. Blair eventually cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal by Miranda Bernard with about four minutes left in the match.
The seventh-seeded Blazers (5-8), which lost 2-1 to Springbrook last week, also received a first-half goal from Julia Stratton.
"We started two freshmen today," Blue Devils coach Francis Kearney said. "We have some injuries going on. We have two starters out so we're still mega-young. I feel like it's one of those seasons where you're not getting to coast. Every practice has to be a thinking practice. That's exhausting."
Springbrook will play third-seeded Magruder (9-4) Tuesday in a 4A South Region semifinal contest. The Colonels defeated sixth-seeded Sherwood, 2-0, Thursday.
3A West Region
Bethesda-Chevy Chase 9, Watkins Mill 0
Lindsay Chan and Mimmy Wenzel produced two goals apiece to pace top-seeded Bethesda-Chevy Chase against ninth-seeded Watkins Mill.
The Barons (11-4), who led 3-0 at halftime, will play fourth-seeded Urbana (6-7) Tuesday in a semifinal contest. Urbana defeated fifth-seeded Frederick, 4-1, Thursday.
"A win's a win now," B-CC coach Amy Wood said. "We're happy to be moving on."
Damascus 2, Seneca Valley 0
Corinn Shutte and Katie Campbell posted goals for second-seeded Damascus to lead the Swarming Hornets past seventh-seeded Seneca Valley for the second time in about a week. The two teams concluded the regular season with Damascus (10-3) taking a 1-0 victory.
The Swarmin' Hornets will now play third-seeded Paint Branch (8-5) Tuesday in a regional semifinal match. Seneca Valley finished at 4-10.
"They were a tough team," Damascus coach Jodi Hathaway said. "They played pretty good defense. Their goalie is pretty good. We tried moving around her and crossed the cage to try to get in before she could move her feet. We worked on getting the ball in space and getting the ball down the field."
Paint Branch 1, Tuscarora 0
Tyler Brown scored the game-winning goal during a first-half penalty corner to lift No. 3 Paint Branch over sixth-seeded Tuscarora. Brown tapped in a loose ball that was tipped around the scoring circle by three teammates.
"We had lots of opportunities," said Panthers coach Daniel Feher, whose team will square off against Damascus. "We controlled for most of the game. We had a couple of balls sail wide of the post. Their goalkeeper was real aggressive. She came out on everything. She was tough."
2A West Region
Winters Mill 2, Clarksburg 0
Clarksburg's best season to date came to a close Thursday as the Coyotes were shut out by second-seeded Winters Mill (10-3).
"We've come a long way," Clarksburg coach Sissy Natoli said. "The kids played hard and battled, but they outhustled us in the first half. It was one of those games where you've got to play out of the starting block."
Clarksburg finished the season with a 6-9 record.
Walkersville 6, Northwood 1
Century 4, Rockville 0
Montgomery County bowed out of the 2A West entirely with two other losses Thursday. Senior Brittany Spear scored Northwood's lone goal in a loss to Walkersville. The Gladiators finished with a 2-11 record. The Rams were shut out by Century.
