Bethesda Design Web, a full-service Web design firm serving small businesses and nonprofits in the Bethesda area, was recently awarded Outstanding Achievement in Website Development by the Interactive Media Awards™ for its work on their nonprofit kids book site, KidsReadingCircle.com.

The honor recognizes that the project met and surpassed the basic standards of excellence that comprise the Web’s most professional work. The site was honored specifically for excellence in Kids.

The judging consisted of criteria including design, usability, innovation in technical features, standards compliance and content.

The winning site, KidsReadingCircle.com, is an extensive book-review and book-list resource launched last year by Chevy Chase resident Debbie Dine, a mother of three, whose hobby, fueled by the interests of her children, is modern K-12 children’s literature. Schools, libraries and PTAs are linking to it.

Children’s National Medical Center recently appointed Dr. Gerard R. Martin as the first C. Richard Beyda Distinguished Professor in Cardiology. It is Children’s first-ever distinguished professorship and the second professorship in cardiology. Martin is the executive director of the Center for Heart, Lung and Kidney Disease, chief of the Division of Cardiology, and co-director of the Children’s National Heart Institute, after starting from a staff attending position in 1986.

The $2.5 million endowment was created through the leadership of C. Richard Beyda, a supporter of Children’s for more than 20 years. A current member of the Children’s Hospital Foundation, he has served in a number of leadership roles, including chairman of Children’s National Medical Center Board and chairman of Children’s Hospital Foundation Board, where he led Children’s first fundraising campaign. He has also served on the Board of Directors for Safe Kids Worldwide.

Martin built the Echocardiography Laboratory at Children’s after arriving in Washington and became the director of the Cardiology Fellowship Training Program in 1993. He was promoted to professor of Pediatrics with tenure at the George Washington University School of Medicine in 1995 and became the chief of cardiology in 1987.

Martin is board-certified in pediatric cardiology, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Board of Pediatrics. He is the associate editor of Pediatric Cardiology.
