A Skate-a-thon fundraiser is being held 2-5 p.m., Saturday at Skate Frederick, 1288 Riverbend Way, Frederick. The event benefits 12-year-old New Market Elementary School and Mount Airy resident Jacqueline Hobbs who is battling Neuroblastoma cancer in her back.
According to a press release, $8 of each ticket sold will go toward the family's rental expenses of a Baltimore apartment near Johns Hopkins hospital where she is receiving treatment. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door.
Roy Rogers at 1990 Riverside Way (right next to Skate Frederick) will donate 10 percent of their earnings for the day when a coupon with Jacqueline's name is presented with payment for food. Coupons will be attached to the skate-a-thon tickets.
For information contact Paula Darragh at 301-829-7179 or pjdarra@comcast.net. Donations can be sent to the Erik Lerch Foundation, P.O. Box 158, Attn: Team Jacqueline, Mount Airy, MD 21771.
The Green Turtle in Mount Airy might have some, err, strange looking customers on Sunday.
The Hogettes, a group of men who dress up in women's dresses, garden hats and pig snouts in support of their favorite football team will be visiting and cheering on the Redskins, while helping raise funds for the Hobbs family.
The group, which helps raise money for children's charities, will be at The Green Turtle Sports Bar and Grill at 1604 Riverside Drive, Mount Airy from 1-4 p.m. In addition to donations, The Green Turtle will donate a portion of the proceeds made during the game to the Hobbs.

Young and old horsemen and horsewomen came out Oct. 5 and rode horses and ponies in games, at the Mount Airy Volunteer Firemen's Carnival Grounds. The group, created to promote horseback riding and friendship for those who enjoy riding through group trail rides and other activities, serves Mount Airy and the surrounding area.
The event, as well as the Spring Schooling Horse Show in April, has been going on for more than 22 years.
