Flowers dominates Bowie in battle of unbeatens Monday, Oct. 23, 2006 The showdown between county high school football powers Charles H. Flowers and Bowie turned into a lopsided laugher as Flowers rolled to a 33-7 victory Saturday in Springdale.
The Jaguars improved to 7-0, both overall and in the County 4A League. They are in a virtual tie in the league with Suitland, which is 6-0 in conference play. But Suitland does have a loss after opening the season with a 30-6 defeat against non-league foe Frederick Douglass. Bowie is 6-1 overall and in the league, and the Bulldogs will have to bounce back quickly, as they play host to Suitland on Saturday. The Rams will head into the game fresh off a 42-0 shellacking of 1-6 Northwestern this past weekend.
Against Bowie, Flowers scored 12 points in the second quarter and led 26-7 at the end of the third period. Clarence Reese ran for 173 yards and a touchdown and Joseph Medley added two touchdown runs. Ryan Brady led a strong effort by the Flowers defense with 18 tackles, including a sack. It was the first time this season that Bowie was held to single digits.
In other games this past weekend, Friendly remained unbeaten and handed two-time defending Class 2A state champ Potomac its second loss of the year. The Patriots cruised to a 54-12 win. Quarterback Joe Haden threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. His brother, Josh Haden, returned both a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass.
Eleanor Roosevelt moved to 5-2 with a 23-0 shutout of Parkdale.
Forestville got two long touchdown passes from Kevin Dickerson to Kevin Dorsey as the Knights turned back DuVal, 13-6.
Douglass continued to solidify itself en route to a spot in the 2A South Region playoffs with a 43-0 domination of Surrattsville. The Eagles are 6-1 with their lone loss coming by a touchdown against defending Class 3A state champ Gwynn Park. Douglass has won three of its last four games by shutout.
First-year program Henry A. Wise won for the second time in its history and amassed its highest point total to date, beating High Point, 34-12. High Point continues to struggle, as the Eagles are winless this fall.
Bladensburg won for the fourth time in its last five outings, shutting out winless Oxon Hill, 14-0. The Mustangs are still alive for a playoff spot, but their next two games are against the top two teams in the County 4A League, Flowers and Suitland.
Crossland won its second in a row with a 27-7 triumph at Laurel. The Cavaliers are now 4-3, while Laurel lost its third straight. The Spartans have been outscored 62-14 over that stretch.
Gwynn Park notched its second shutout in as many weeks, beating Central, 39-0. The Yellow Jackets are 6-1 with games remaining against Surrattsville, Potomac and Fairmont Heights. Central, meanwhile, has fallen on hard times again. After going winless and scoring just 24 points last season, the Falcons opened this fall with a 42-0 victory against Springarn (D.C.). But since then, Central has lost six straight and has scored just eight points. The Falcons get a good chance for a win as they travel to Largo for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday. The Lions snapped a five-game losing streak last weekend with a 6-0 victory against Fairmont Heights. But Largo has scored just 26 points this season.
DeMatha has had a couple of big first quarters this fall, but none like the one the Stags had Saturday against Carroll. Taking advantage of turnovers, DeMatha scored all 48 of its points in the first period in a 48-19 victory. Quarterback Chester Stewart tossed three touchdown passes and seven different DeMatha players scored touchdowns as the Stags easily moved to 8-0. DeMatha's next opponent is McNamara, which won a crucial game in its quest for a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference playoff spot. The Mustangs turned back Paul VI, 24-21, to improve to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the league. McNamara will face DeMatha at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parkdale High.
Bishop Ireton ripped open a close game with 27 points in the third quarter in a 44-19 victory against Riverdale Baptist. The Crusaders trailed 14-13 at halftime before Ireton reeled off four touchdowns in the third period.
Pallotti dropped to 3-5 with a 41-7 loss Friday night at Cardinal Gibbons.
