The Woodsboro resident is married with four children and three grandchildren. He said one of the things he likes most about his job is the people he gets to work with on a daily basis.
Although he never had a favorite Halloween costume as a kid he said he "just wanted the candy" Johann did have a favorite treat: popcorn balls.
Q: How can parents decide where take their children or let their teenagers go trick-or-treating?
Johann: "Unfortunately, the days of just going around the neighborhood is vanishing. I think the best thing to do is only go to those houses where you know the occupants, or right in your own neighborhood where you know the majority of the people living there. The other choice is to have a Halloween party with other families in your community or go to one of the malls that has trick-or-treating."
Q: Any tips with safety in regard to costumes?
"Use your head when making or getting costumes for yourself or your children. Make sure you can see out of the costume. Make sure you can be seen if you are going to be out near traffic and always carry a flashlight or other light source."
Q: Is there anything parents should be aware of and look for in regard to candy and other treats?
Johann: "As the saying goes: If in doubt throw it out!' Parents or a responsible adult should check all the candy and treats before any of them are consumed. Never eat anything that is unwrapped or if the wrapper looks like it has been tampered with. If you are not sure about something being safe to eat throw it out. Never enter anyone's house while trick-or-treating."
Q: Any pedestrian or motorist travelling suggestions?
Johann: "First, motorists need to remember to slow down and watch out for children. Often the children will get so excited they will dart out in the street heading for another house. Motorists need to be very aware of this and be ready to stop. Pedestrians need to carry an easily seen light source, preferably wear light colored costumes and remember the rules of the road. Always stop, look and listen before entering or crossing any roadway. Parents should hold the hands of small children whenever crossing any roadway."
Q: Do you have any advice or suggestions for residents giving treats out?
"Never invite children into your house, keep your outside lights on while giving out treats and make sure walkways are clear of debris. Give out treats that are commercially packaged. Do not leave a bowl of candy outside. It can be tampered with and might attract animals."
Q: Anything additional Halloween tips or hints?
"I think that about covers it. People must remember to be very careful while out trick-or-treating and if they feel something is not right contact their local police agency. Hopefully, everyone will have a wonderful time and keep safe."
