Unbeaten Bowie, Flowers set for County 4A showdown

The Bowie and Charles H. Flowers high school football teams each remained unbeaten over the weekend in preparation for their showdown Saturday.

Flowers notched its second shutout of the season with a 43-0 domination of Northwestern, while Bowie rolled to a 42-0 win over Oxon Hill. Jarren Brown, Clarence Reese and Joseph Medley all surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for Flowers against Northwestern and James Dews led the defense with 11 tackles and two sacks. Meanwhile, Bowie got 102 yards and a touchdown from Dennis Thomas and Andrew Trimmer ran for a touchdown and threw for another.

Bowie and Flowers are both 6-0 as they head into Saturdays’ game, a 2 p.m. kickoff at Flowers High in Springdale. The winner will have the inside track to the No. 1 seed for the 4A South Region playoffs, though the road the rest of the season will be considerably more difficult for Bowie. The Bulldogs face Suitland on Oct. 28 and Eleanor Roosevelt on Nov. 4. Suitland and Roosevelt are a combined 9-3 this fall and are both likely playoff teams. Bowie closes the regular season against winless High Point. Flowers’ last three games are against Bladensburg, Laurel and first-year program Henry Wise, which are a combined 7-11.

In other county games last weekend, Friendly broke open a game it led 14-0 at the half with a 22-point third quarter en route to a 42-0 victory against Surrattsville. The Patriots (6-0) got six catches for 86 yards and four touchdowns from wide receiver Vincent Hill.

Gwynn Park improved to 5-1 with a 46-0 victory against Largo. Linebacker Kevin Williams had three interceptions and scored touchdowns on an 18-yard catch and a 16-yard run.

Douglass survived a wild first quarter to beat Forestville, 36-18. The Eagles led, 14-12, at the end of the first period before scoring 16 unanswered points. Jerrell Wedge carried 22 times for 238 yards and three touchdowns for Douglass.

Roosevelt sent Laurel to its second straight loss, beating the Spartans, 21-0. Nigel Rios had a 24-yard touchdown reception and returned a punt 52 yards for a touchdown.

Suitland was a 40-0 winner against High Point as Mikeem Chavious ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns and Jerry Clinton had nine tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Crossland turned back Wise, 22-8, as Monty Douglass ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns for the Cavaliers.

DuVal shut out Central, 34-0, as Andre Clark carried 10 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns and also returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown.

Potomac trailed Fairmont Heights, 12-8, at halftime, but shut out the Hornets, 13-0, in the second half to win, 21-12. Marques Davis carried 26 times for 123 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Parkdale broke a three-game losing streak with a 12-10 win against Bladensburg. The Panthers fell behind, 10-0, in the first half before Eric Evans tossed touchdown passes to Kay Kromah and Jason Smith in the second half.

In private school football last weekend, DeMatha remained unbeaten by rolling to a 30-6 win against Gonzaga (D.C.). Quarterback Chester Stewart ran for a touchdown and connected with Kenny Tate on a touchdown pass. Tate also returned a punt 45 yards for a score. In another Washington Catholic Athletic Conference game, McNamara was a 22-14 loser to St. John’s (D.C.). Marcus Harrington caught a touchdown pass and quarterback Earl Harris connected with running back Rayvon Williams on a 50-yard touchdown pass as the Mustangs took a 14-6 lead into halftime before being shut out in the second half.

Riverdale Baptist dropped an 18-12 decision to Friendship Collegiate (D.C.). Friendship got a touchdown with 30 seconds to play to secure the win.

On Friday night, Pallotti got 27 carries for 198 yards and two touchdowns from Kyle Moore as the Panthers beat Avalon (Montgomery County), 32-13. Moore is the county’s leading rusher this season with 1,030 yards and he’s scored nine touchdowns in seven games.
