The CPG Panthers Junior Peewee football team will begin play in the first round of the Maryland Pop Warner playoffs on Saturday in Baltimore.
The Panthers, a first-year team in the Maryland Pop Warner Association, qualified for the playoffs by finishing in the top eight of the league standings.
The team is comprised of 22 8- to 11-year olds including Adam Gillis, Alfred Cheadle, Brian Davis, Dabeyon Byrd, Daryll Lawrence, Daryn Dozier, Davonne Gray, Deven McNeal, Dexter Mercer, Dylan McNeal, Earnest Smith, George Young-Bey, Kevin Young-Bey, Joseph Wise, Mykal Coleman, Paul Kofa, Tosin Adebayo, Trey Reavenell, Treyvon Roy, Victor Dunbar, Vincent Dunbar and Xavier Miller.
The Panthers won their most recent game, shutting out the Woodlawn Falcons, 13-0, on Sunday. Kofa had a reception on a 65-yard reverse pass from Roy, setting up a touchdown from Dunbar in the first half. Dunbar added a second touchdown run in the second half.
MLK baseball team unbeaten
The Martin Luther King Middle School baseball team has amassed a 5-0 record this fall behind numerous strong pitching performances.
Matthew Cherresky and Alex Haraim combined to toss MLK’s second no-hitter of the season in a 7-2 victory against Samuel Ogle Middle School on Oct. 5. MLK also started the season with a no-hitter, beating Hyattsville Middle, 11-0. Cherresky and Haraim combined on a one-hitter in a 22-2 victory against Buck Lodge Middle. The pair combined with Steven Moore to pitch the Cobras to a 6-3 victory against Eisenhower Middle. MLK also earned a 9-2 victory against Tasker Middle.
Against Ogle, Cherresky also hit a second-inning triple and finished with four runs batted in. Kyle Jiron, Anthony Nicome, Daryl Dent, Arron Jackson, Terrell Holley, Jon Wilson, Halim Kamara, Joshua Howard, Justin Albreiht, Tim Hensel, Michael Ruiz and Langston Burnett also have contributed for MLK.
Fireballs shut out Oxon Hill
The Lewisdale-University Park Fireballs U-14 girls’ soccer team was a 2-0 winner against Oxon Hill last week.
Camille Richman and Abigail Cahen each had goals for LUP. Richman scored at the 11-minute mark when her corner kick deflected into the net off an Oxon Hill defender. Cahen hit a left-footed shot on an assist from Erica DeJohn, who turned in a strong performance at center midfield. An excellent defensive effort by the Fireballs prevented Oxon Hill from taking a shot on goal.
HMB football teams win
The Hyattsville-Mount Rainier-Brentwood Boys and Girls Club 75-pound football team rolled to a 32-0 victory against Riverdale last weekend.
Quarterback Derrick Samuels ran for three touchdowns. Wide receiver Marcus Lyons opened the scoring when he ran 40 yards for a touchdown on a reverse. Running back Lawrence Prograis got a key block from Ray Parks Jr. that spung him for a touchdown run. Linemen Delonte Proctor, Shane James, Eric Kennard, Rashad Mack and Jackson Proctor also helped pave the way for the ground game.
Lafayette Davis Jr., Kenneth Simmons and Darren Long helped lead the defense to the shutout.
HMB’s 110-pound team rebounded from a loss to Kettering-Largo-Mitchellville two weekends ago to beat Glenarden. Christopher Benjamin scored the only touchdown of the game for HMB.
The HMB 65-pound game against College Park was cancellled due to inclement weather. The team returns to action on Saturday against Palmer Park at Palmer Park Rec.
Port Towns teams victorious
The Port Towns Boys and Girls Club 75- and 110-pound football teams were both victorious last weekend.
The 75-pound team beat Greenbelt on Saturday to move to 4-0 this fall.
The 110-pound team also beat Greenbelt to improve to 3-1. The Wolves were scoreless for three quarters and their defense also kept Greenbelt from scoring. In the fourth quarter, Nigel Christian sacked Greenbelt’s quarterback on a fourth-down play. On Port Towns’ ensuing series, Christian ran for a touchdown to give the Wolves the victory.
Both teams return to action in homecoming games on Satuday at Fletcher’s Field.
Riverdale plans homecoming
The Riverdale Boys and Girls Club will hold its football homecoming from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at Fletcher’s Field. The club will raffle off a 20-inch flat screen television, an 8-inch portable DVD player and a movie night gift basket. Call Tawanna at 240-304-6910.
Beltsville-Adelphiholding registration
The Beltsville-Adelphi Boys and Girls Club has extended registration for cheerleading and has begun registration for basketball. Registrations are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday at the club, 11705 Roby Ave. in Beltsville. Fees are $60 for cheerleading and $40 for basketball with a $40 yearly membership fee per family.
Coaches clinic planned
The University of Maryland women’s basketball team will hold its annual coaches clinic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Comcast Center. The clinic will include guest speakers, University of Maryland women’s coach Brenda Frese and University of Maryland-Baltimore County coach Phil Stern. Participants must pre-register. Free lacrosse clinics offered
The Prince George’s Lacrosse Club will hold free youth clinics from 2 to 3:15 p.m. for boys and beginning at 3:15 p.m. for girls on Sunday at University Park Town Field and on Oct. 21 at Greenbelt Middle School. Synchronized swim clinic, class offered
The Potomac Valley Pearls synchronized swimming team offers a beginning synchronized swimming class that meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 4 to 5 p.m. Sundays in October and November. Track teams seek members
The Southern Maryland Striders Track and Field Club will hold practices for the 2006-07 indoor season at the Gwynn Park Middle School gym starting Dec. 7. The team is for athletes ages 7 to 15 and is a member of USATF and the AAU’s Potomac Valley Region. The team competes locally and nationally and practices outdoors at Surrattsville High School.
