Two Prince George's County detectives in police districts serving the Upper Marlboro area were named "Detectives of the Year" by the county police department and Prince George's Crime Solvers at a Sept. 27 awards ceremony.
Wendy Ewing in District 2 and Mark Roller in District 5 were chosen by their commanders for service to their department and community. The awards were given at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington.
One detective was chosen from the Criminal Investigation Division, the Narcotics Enforcement Division and each of the six district stations.
Acting Chief of Police Roberto Hylton attended the event, as well as Crime Solvers Board President Eric Griffen. Maj. Kevin Davis, commander of the District 1 station, was the master of ceremonies.

Department asks residents to honor fallen firefighters
The Prince George's County EMS/Fire Department is asking residents to keep their American flags at half-staff in honor of fallen firefighters Oct. 16.
The lowering of flags will coincide with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's memorial weekend events in Emmitsburg. A plaque with the names of 110 firefighters who have died in service from across the country will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

Deadline for voter registration is Tuesday
Maryland residents who wish to vote in the Nov. 4 election must submit their completed registration, in person or by mail, to a county or state board of elections office by Tuesday. Month continues
The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department is reminding county residents that Fire Prevention Month continues until the end of October.
The EMS Department, in cooperation with the National Fire Protection Center, is urging residents to make home evacuation plans and make sure they have working smoke alarms.
The Cold Stone Creamery on 880 Capital Centre Blvd. in Largo is offering a 15 percent discount to customers who bring a completed home escape plan between Saturday and Wednesday.

Upper Marlboro resident completes Air Force training
An Upper Marlboro native has finished from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Airman Derrick A. Young spent six weeks studying the Air Force's mission, organization and customs, performed drill ceremonies and marches, and received training in physical fitness, rifle marksmanship, field exercises and human relations.
Young is a 2005 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro and the son of Upper Marlboro resident Debra Washington.
Upper Marlboro native earns $10,000 scholarship
An Upper Marlboro man earned a $10,000 scholarship from Purdue University in Indiana Oct. 1.
Quentin Ford, a freshman majoring in pre-veterinary medicine, was awarded the school's Food Environmental Engineering Life Sciences award at the Purdue University College of Agriculture scholarship banquet.
Ford is the son of Upper Marlboro resident Carolyn Ford and a graduate of Bowie High School.
Farm to host Oktoberfest
The Hard Bargain Farm in Accokeek will host the Alice Ferguson Foundation's 28th Oktoberfest from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday.
The celebration will offer German cuisine such as bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, apple strudel, fresh cider and Spaten beer. There will be live and silent auctions featuring the works of local artists, as well as door prizes, hayrides and a performance by the Alt Washingtonia Schuhplattlersdance group.
In an effort to make the event trash-free, the Oktoberfest will use biodegradable corn- and potato-based flatware and drinking cups.
All proceeds benefit the Alice Ferguson Foundation, which is a non-profit education program that operates the Hard Bargain Farm Environment Center, which provides educational field trips for students on the farm.

Enthusiasts organize benefit for neglected horses
Horse lovers in the Upper Marlboro area are getting ready for National Rescue Ride events Oct. 19 in Rosaryville State Park.
People are invited to ride or walk in the park to raise money for charities that seek to end the abuse and neglect of horses. Similar events are happening on the same day across the country.

Pirates Car Wash in Glenn Dale is launching a fundraising program to raise funds for The Foundation for the Advancement of Music and Education, Inc., or FAME, a Bowie non-profit that provides support for student music and education programs in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and individual scholarships.
