Five county public high school seniors in Girl Scout Troop 6131 are completing their Gold Award Project, the highest award in Girl Scouts.
The project is "Girls Leadership Conference: Mind, Body and Soul," which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at Ernest Everett Just Middle School at 1300 Campus Way North in Mitchellville.
The conference offers workshops in interpersonal communications, health and fitness and model behavior for girls in grades three to eight. There will also be lunch, guest speakers and activities.
Girls do not have to be Girl Scouts to attend.

The Glenwood Park community celebrates 50th anniversary
The Glenwood Park community is celebrating its 50th anniversary at a social from 5 to 6 p.m. and a dinner program from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at La Fontaine Bleu, 7963 Annapolis Road in Lanham.

Deadline for voter registration Oct. 14
Maryland residents who wish to vote in the Nov. 4 election must submit their completed registration, in person or by mail, to a county or state board of elections office by Tuesday. Glenn Dale singer performs at Legislative Conference
Marilyn Ashford-Brown of Glenn Dale performed at the 38th annual Legislative Conference dinner Sept. 27 in Washington, D.C., which honored Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Phoenix award.
Grammy Award winner Patti LaBelle also performed, and the dinner was co-hosted by actress Holly Robinson Peete and husband Rodney Peete, a retired NFL quarterback.

Semifinalists set for 2009 Achievement Scholarships
Prince George's County Public School students from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt and Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale are semifinalists in the 45th annual Achievement Scholarship competition by the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Students will compete for one of 700 scholarships worth more than $1.7 million, which will be awarded in the spring.
The semifinalists from Eleanor Roosevelt High School are Jonathan Abraham, Abidemi Adenikinju, Kahlil Blount, Yasmin Boakye, Danielle DaCosta, Godly Jack, Akosua Johnson, Aria Miles, Vivianne Oyefusi, Ashley Powers and Neima Rahim.
The semifinalists from Charles Herbert Flowers High School are Tristan Daniels, Eric Fields, Brianna Gibson and Victoria Waltz.
To advance to the finalist level in the competition, semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that show PSAT/NMSQT performance. Students must also complete a scholarship application and provide information about participation in school and community activities, leadership activities and education goals.
Community college hosts inaugural gospel concert
Prince George's Community College in Largo hosted an inaugural gospel concert Oct. 2 featuring Jonathan Nelson, a Baltimore native, singer and songwriter, and his ensemble, Purpose.
Nelson is recognized for the hit "My Name is Victory" from his latest album, "Right Now Praise."
The Bowie State University Gospel Choir also performed.
The concert was part of the inauguration celebration of Charlene Mickens Dukes, eighth president of the college.

wins debate tournament
The Woodstream Christian Academy High School debate team from Mitchellville won first place at the first debate tournament of the school year Sept. 27.
Team members Travis O'Dell, Candice Brown and Alisha Talley won second place and are the defending 2007-2008 team champions with an undefeated record Saturday of 4-0. Lauren Mosley, Cheremie Fortune and Stephanie Goodalle won fifth place, and Tori Agnew and Ashley Anglin won seventh place in team standings.
In the category of best speaker awards, Tori Agnew won fourth place, Candice Brown won sixth place, Travis O'Dell won eighth place and Alisha Talley won 10th place.
Car wash launches fundraising campaign
Pirates Car Wash in Glenn Dale is launching a fundraising program to raise funds for The Foundation for the Advancement of Music and Education Inc., or FAME, a Bowie nonprofit that provides support for student music and education programs in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and individual scholarships.

County fire department asks residents to honor fallen firefighters
The Prince George's County EMS/Fire Department is asking residents to keep their American flags at half-mast in honor of fallen firefighters Oct. 16.
The lowering of flags will coincide with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's memorial weekend events in Emmitsburg. A plaque with the names of 110 firefighters who have died in service from across the country will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

County fire department reminds residents that Fire Prevention Month continues
The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department is reminding county residents that Fire Prevention Month continues until the end of October.
The EMS Department, in cooperation with the National Fire Protection Center, is urging residents to make home evacuation plans and make sure they have working smoke alarms.
