During the sixth annual Gorgeous Prince George's Day, volunteers will chip in to make curbside improvements throughout the Port Towns on Oct. 18.
The Port Towns, which include Bladensburg, Colmar Manor Cottage City and Edmonston, will receive new plantings along select streets.
The event, sponsored by the Port Towns Community Development Corporation, is dubbed "Project Impact" and will also include mural painting, placing trash cans, and acquiring street banners.
The Neighborhood Design Center created landscape plans for six sites, including a café, a bus stop and a right-of-way.
The town of Bladensburg will sponsor a planting at an apartment complex, and Colmar Manor and Cottage City are also conducting plantings. Bladensburg High School and Port Towns Elementary School will conduct plantings, too.
Raising domestic violence awareness in Hyattsville
Hyattsville's Franklin's Restaurant will donate much of its proceeds on Monday to support the "Know the Signs, Stop the Abuse" campaign.
The campaign is hosted by the First United Methodist Church of Hyattsville. It will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 26. The event will raise domestic violence awareness and will include speakers from the National Network to End Domestic Violence, as well as other community organizations.
Customers dining at Franklin's, located at 5121 Baltimore Ave., have to mention the First United Methodist Church of Hyattsville to their servers in order to have 20 percent of their meal's proceeds earmarked for the campaign.

Riverdale resident's nephew graduates via Army program
Army Sgt. Roland Temah, the nephew of Riverdale resident Pogar Chang, graduated from the University of Maryland, University of College through the army's GoArmyEd program.
Temah graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology using Army tuition assistance for active duty soldiers.
Temah has been in the Army for five years and currently serves as a veterinary food inspector for the 248th medical detachment at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C.
Hyattsville resident graduates from Wentworth
A Hyattsville resident graduated during this summer's commencement at the Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Margaret Mazz graduated with a bachelor's degree in industrial design. She is one of 507 students who graduated Aug. 17.
Christmas delivery donations needed
Milton McGehee and his wife deliver Christmas gift boxes to wounded veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center every year, and this fall they hope to send 100 gift boxes.
McGehee is asking for donations of specific items, including disposable cameras, large crew-neck T-shirts, deodorant, shaving cream, shavers, bars of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, magazines and DVDs.
McGehee is delivering the boxes by Thanksgiving and needs donations by Nov. 15. Call 301-559-0864.
Northwestern High teacher attends Dutch art institute
Northwestern High School's Jennifer Hendricks was one of 50 teachers who attended the National Gallery of Art's Teacher Institute on 17th century Dutch art over the summer.
Hendricks attended the two, six-day long seminars over the summer, along with art and social studies teachers from 22 states.
Teachers learned how to integrate art objects into the classroom using methods like podcasting. They focused on the museum's collection of 17th century works by Dutch artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer.
Bunker Hill
open house planned
The Bunker Hill Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association will host a fire prevention open house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
There will be games and activities for children, including a coloring contest judged by firefighters. Families are welcomed at the event, which will also include food and a fire truck display.
The Bunker Hill station is located at 3716 Rhode Island Ave.
Langley Park to host holiday basketball tourney
The Langley Park Boys and Girls Club is hosting its Thanksgiving Turkey Ball over Thanksgiving weekend.
The competition is from Nov. 28 to 30 and is open to children ages 9 through 14. Each team is guaranteed to play at least four games.
Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third prizes winners, and the first prize winner takes home $200. There will also be a halftime show with music and dancing. To register, call 301-434-7500.
County shelter celebrates adopt-a-dog month
Prince George's County has designated October as Adopt-a-dog month and invites residents to the county animal shelter in Forestville to adopt an animal and have a shot a winning free pet supplies.
"Whether someone is looking for a big dog, a little dog or puppy, we've got it covered," said Animal Management Associate Director Rodney Taylor. "As an added incentive, everyone who adopts a dog from the shelter during the month of October will be eligible to win a free basket of dog supplies and gifts."

University of Maryland unveils new Ecotainer'
The University of Maryland, College Park, started using the first completely compostable paper cold cups in the country on Sept. 29.
The new cup, called the "Ecotainer," was introduced at the Energy Zone, which will use the cups for both smoothies and frozen yogurt. Energy Zone is located in the Eppley Student Recreation Center.
The cup was unveiled after a presentation by Ecotainer inventor Chris Roeder and Energy Zone spokesperson Ed Redmond.
Fire safety awareness throughout the county
In recognition of Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 5 through Oct. 11, the Prince George's County Fire and EMS Department will reward families with a 15 percent discount at the Cold Stone Creamery at Largo's Boulevard at the Capital Centre when they bring in a completed escape route plan. Residents can download a copy of a home escape planning kit from Cold Stone Creamery or at www.nfpa.org.
