The South Carroll girls soccer team improved its record to 6-3 with a 4-0 shutout victory over the winless Brunswick in Tuesday's Monocacy Valley Athletic League non-conference contest.
The Cavaliers' offensive attack was as crisp as the autumn air, but had to wait 31 minutes for the game's first goal.
"It took awhile, we had a couple near misses in the first half, but that's part of the game, you got to play the full 80 minutes," said South Carroll head coach Jerry Janowich.
Senior forward Amanda Wharton scored the game's first goal after a poor clearance by the Brunswick defense. The attempted clearance went right to the feet of Wharton, who she nudged it into the left corner.
Wharton added two more goals to complete her second hat trick of the year, bringing her total for the season to 12.
"I want to get 15, maybe 16, but it feels good to get the hat trick," said Wharton.
Sophomore Markie Quiambao-Panas added the game's other goal after another poor clearance by the Railroaders' defense left alone in front of the goal. The Cavs' defense dictated the pace of the game, smothering the Railroaders offense, allowing little to no attack. "When you come together in August, you have to organize everything starting from the back. That's how you build a team," said Janowich.
The Railroaders' best chance to score came in the 36th minute when senior forward Bethany McCallum split the Cavaliers' defense, but missed wide right with only the keeper to beat.
To the naked eye, it appeared that the South Carroll game plan was flawless, but Janowich saw it differently.
"We need to switch the ball better; we still kind of drill the ball through the middle of the field. We need to work on our ball possession."
