Kingswood residents Bob Brown, Sheila Reid, Sheila Jenkins, Bob Bowman, Alvin Hurd, John Sloan, Jeff Thorton, Creavery Lloyd and Kingswood Civic Association's president, Hakim Muhammad, were honored Sept. 17 for their commitment and service to the Kingswood community.
These Kingswood residents received citations from the Maryland General Assembly, presented by Del. Justin Ross (D-Dist. 22) of Greenbelt and Sen. Paul Pinsky (D-Dist. 22) of University Park.
Brian Ellison, 19, a Kingswood resident and sophomore at Washington Bible College in Lanham, received a $1,000 student scholarship for his academic success and his community service within Kingswood.
Evan Reynolds, 17, a Kingswood resident and junior board member of the civic association, was recognized for his service to the community. Reynolds is a junior at Kennedy Krieger High School in Baltimore.
Councilman Eric Olson (D-Dist. 3) of College Park; Wanda Brooks, who works with Olson; Ross; Pinsky; Cpl. Jennifer Simms; and William Edelen, the Prince George's County Department of Environmental Resources code enforcement officer, were also honored for their support of the Kingswood community over the years.
Lanham resident named
to dean's list
Gaurav Srivastava of Lanham was named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Srivastava, the son of Dayanand and Sudha Srivastava, is a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt.
He majored in neuroscience and graduated from the university in May.
Students named to the dean's list must take a minimum of 14 credit hours and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
School presents breast cancer awareness fashion show
Prince George's Community College in Largo is presenting a breast cancer awareness fashion show with a reception at 6 p.m. and the show at 7 p.m. Friday in the Queen Anne Theatre at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
The fashion show features live music, more than 50 models and custom clothing, among other things.
Tickets for students are free with proof of enrollment. Non-student tickets are $10.
Tickets are available in the College Life Services Office in room 149 on the first floor of the Largo Student Center.
Largo college celebrates Hispanic heritage month
Prince George's Community College in Largo is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage month, which recognizes Americans of Hispanic decent and their contributions to the United States.
The play "Living in Two Languages" is at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Rennie Forum in the Largo Student Center.
The play explores what it means to be grow up in the heart of the American melting pot.

The Prince George's Community College culinary arts students will prepare traditional Hispanic dishes for the National Hispanic Heritage month closing ceremony from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 15 in conference room two in the Largo Student Center.
Music students will sing native Argentinean songs by Myrna Meeroff, and the winning essay from the "Hispanic Americans Making a Positive Impact on American Society" contest will be read.

Airmen with area ties graduate from basic training
Air Force Airmen Aurelia R. Copeland and Eric A. Meshako recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Copeland is the daughter of Warren Copeland of Polk Street in Glenarden and Wilma Storrod of Spotsylvania, Va.
She is a 2007 graduate of Largo High School in Upper Marlboro.
Meshako is the son of Robert Meshako of Cambridge Drive in Upper Marlboro.

free weekly tutoring
Upper Marlboro's Union United Methodist Church will be offering a free after-school homework help program for students in grades three through eight.

Mall hosting coat drive
and black doll show
The Mall at Prince Georges in Hyattsville is again hosting a Black Doll Show and Sale featuring African-American doll artists, vendors and collectors who will display and sell items.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 3500 East-West Highway in Hyattsville.
The event includes a special exhibit of Dorothy Dandridge memorabilia.

Nonprofit holds domestic violence empowerment breakfast
Sisters4Sisters Inc., a Lanham-based nonprofit organization, is holding its fourth annual Silent Tears Domestic Violence Empowerment Breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 31 at Martins Crosswinds at 7400 Greenway Center Drive in Greenbelt.
The goal of the event is to educate the community on domestic and sexual violence resources and services and provide awareness and prevention tools. Area survivors and families will share their stories.

Lanham hospital holds support group for women with cancer
Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham is holding a free support group for women with cancer, mainly breast cancer, as well as for their female friends and family members.
The group meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Medical Office Building, room 417 at Doctors Community Hospital at 8118 Good Luck Road in Lanham.
The meeting begins with a cancer-related presentation, a question-and-answer session and group discussion for patient concerns. Participants will learn coping skills and how to regain a sense of control.
The group meets the third Tuesday of each month.

Glenn Dale nonprofit to participate in breast cancer walk
All Shades of Pink, Inc., a Glenn Dale-based nonprofit organization that assists women and their families diagnosed with breast cancer with resource referrals, nonmedical advice and/or emergency financial assistance during their treatment period, is participating in the 2009 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at 10 a.m. Oct. 31 at the Washington Nationals Stadium in Southeast Washington, D.C.
Team ASOP's goal is to raise $500.
There is no fee to participate in the walk, but ASOP asks supporters to donate to help ASOP meet their fundraising goal.

Largo school hosting seminar on relationship violence
Prince George's Community College is hosting relationship violence seminars in the second floor lobby, conference room 2 and Rennie Forum of the Largo Student Center at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
"Being Resourceful Where Do I Find help?" is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Victims and friends of the abused receive resources for shelter, food, clothing, financial assistance, protection orders and counseling.
"Relationships and Communication: How To Know When It's Abusive?" is from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday. The seminar discusses how to analyze love and relationships and how people communicate positively and negatively in those relationships.

County club celebrates 25 years of community service
The Prince George's County Club of Zonta International is celebrating 25 years of service in the community in an event that will be held from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at The Country Club at Woodmore at 12320 Pleasant Prospect in Mitchellville.
Tickets are $40 per person. Proceeds will benefit The Family Crisis Center of Prince George's County and various other service projects.
Prince George's County First Lady Leslie Johnson will serve as emcee. Entertainment will include the 2008 Prince George's Idol winner, food and a silent auction.
