Camp Seneca house on parks’ demolition list

The county parks department seeks public input on the future of a two-story house at Camp Seneca Special Park in Boyds. The park is home to Camp Seneca, a summer activity camp run by the county recreation department.

The building, also rented for birthday parties, classes or other activities, is slated for demolition. The summer camp would be relocated to the larger, modern Seneca Lodge next door.

It is not clear when the house with five shutter-front windows was built, but it has not been designated historic.

The house is one of 31 small to medium-sized buildings on county parklands now under review for historic designation, transfer or demolition due to poor conditions and lack or use.

No decision has been reached on the future of any of the buildings and the parks department is actively meeting with communities that express concern, said spokeswoman Kelly Holsendolph.

A Town Hall meeting will be held 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at Brookside Gardens and Nature Centers in Wheaton.

Final recommendations will be presented to the Planning Board after February 2008 following a final community presentation, Holsendolph said.

Comments may be sent to the Montgomery County Department of Parks, 9500 Bennett Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20901. For more information, visit www.Parkplanningandstewardship.org. To request a community meeting, e-mail MCP-RedBuilding@mncppc.org or call 301-650-4389.
