The Tuscarora High girls soccer team overwhelmed visiting Linganore High, 4-0 in Tuesday night's Monocacy Valley Athletic League Piedmont Conference clash.
Senior midfielder Michelle Rock led the way for the Titans (6-2, 1-1 Piedmont Conference) with two goals, while sophomore midfielder Katie Long and freshman forward Aaran Parry added a goal each. Another freshman, midfielder Emily Marshall added an assist.
"We needed to start stretching the field and open up the game a little more, said Tuscarora head coach Mark Walcott. "We started finding Aaran and Michelle out wide behind the wingbacks. Once that started happening, goals came and our pressure was relentless."
The Titans' persistence led to an eight to one difference in corner kicks earned.
"We had a lot of trouble scoring last year and she [Parry] is really good up top, really fast and composed on the ball," said Rock.
"We learned we can play with a team as good as this, in the first half, especially the last 20, it was pretty even," said Linganore head coach Howard Putterman, whose team fell to 2-3-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
While the Tuscarora offense was potent, its defense was also solid throughout the entire game.
The unit, led by senior fullback Brittany Clemons didn't allow Linganore to get a shot on goal until 15 minutes were left on the clock.
[The defense is] a wonderful group," said Walcott.
"It's lead by Brittany Clemons and Annie Wicket, and I thought they along with the wingbacks [sophomore Kelsey Fletcher and senior Brittany Chatfield] did a great job managing the game."
Lancers' freshman midfielder Jayne Cunha and junior forward Stephanie Giangiuli tested the Titans' but were unable to crack the scoreboard.
"We're dying with injuries right now. After tonight we now have six, five of which are starters," said Putterman.
Linganore goalkeeper Edie Riggs made four saves; while Alex Stubenrauch added one.
