Subway will soon set up shop inside the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington in Rockville, making it the only kosher Subway franchise in the Washington, D.C., region.
There are only 11 kosher franchises in the nation, with the nearest being in Baltimore, Subway spokesman Les Winograd said.
It will be the second of its kind housed inside a Jewish community center, said Rebecca Hurowitz, the JCC's communications director.
The Dunkin' Donuts that had been located in the lobby of the JCC for nearly 10 years closed late last month after its owners decided to sell the franchise, Hurowitz said. Subway has plans to renovate and expand the space, she said.
The future owner of the restaurant signed a 10-year lease with the JCC last week to rent space in the Montrose Road building.
The shop is scheduled to open over the winter, Hurowitz said.
Kosher law prohibits eating dairy products with meat. The menu will be dairy-free and include meat and pareve, which are items that are prepared without meat, milk or their derivatives and therefore can be eaten with both meat and dairy dishes, Hurowitz said. Examples of pareve are fruits, vegetables, fish, eggs and bread.
With slight modifications, such as no bacon or ham and soy-based cheese, the restaurant's menu will be nearly identical to other Subway restaurants, Hurowitz said. It will be under the supervision of the Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington.
With members and visitors coming in and out of the center for classes and programs every day, she believes Subway will be an attractive new feature for people looking to grab a quick bite.
"We think Subway is going to offer a lot of great options that will benefit our community," Hurowitz said.
